Triumph TR3 - Adjustable Steering Wheel Conversion

My 1959 TR3A has an adjustable steering wheel and I would like to replace it with a non adjustable type. I need to replace the steering wheel anyway so I thought this would be a good time to do the conversion.

I forgot to mention I would really like to replace it with a wood grain wheel, but if there is an easier way to do it with a conventional wheel I will go that route

If your steering wheel is broken, I can see you wanting to change it. But if it's only gone brownish in colour, all you need to do is sand it with 1000 grit fine rubbing wet/dry paper to remove the oxide on the plastic surface. When it's all black again, spray it with a can of clear coat. Do the same for the control head too as well as the horn button. Careful, not too much on the horn button, or it will stay honking in the "down" position if the clear coat is too thick, it'll jam "on".

Mine still looks great after 12 summers and over 70,00 miles.

If you switch to a wooden steering wheel, they look neat, but not original. And where do you put the clicker for the directional signals as well as the horn button ?

I needed to replace my steering wheel due to it was falling apart so I took Dons advise and went with an original wheel. I am having a problem getting the control head off. I followed the instructions from my manual but still cannot get it off. I loosened the grub screws disconnected the wires and took off the gland nut am I missing anything.
Thanks Scott

Scott - E-mail me at elliott_tr3a@hotmail.com with your home address and I'll mail you what I have collected over the years on the control head. There's not much about this in the manuals.
