Triumph Spitfire - Won't re-start when hot

I have a spitfire 1500 which has developed a strange fault. When hot (but not overheating) it refuses to re-start with a click and maybe just one turn of the starter as if the battery is nearly dead. However after 2 or 3 minutes it starts fine which I assume is related to it becoming cooler. Has anyone had the same problem and what is the answer?
