Triumph Spitfire - Vehicle ID Number

I have a 1980 Spitfire with the ID prefix TFZDW29T. My insurance company says that is not a valid VIN. They claim the 9 should be an A. I have seen other VINs with a 9 in that spot. Any ideas from anyone?
