Triumph Spitfire - steering rack mk3 spit

does anyone have any suggestions as to a problem im having with my steering rack.

I have completly re-built with new parts throughout, my complete front suspension. when i re-fitted the rack i re-greased it but have noticed that when i turn the steering wheel it seems to feel loose then tigher then loose as it rotates. also it seems to click as the rack moves and the noise is passed up the steering column and can be felt at the steering wheel the noise also would appear to almost sound like a creak and it hapens if the car is either jacked up or on the floor.
any suggestions to cure this problem or confirm if it is a problem or not would be appreciated.
