Triumph Spitfire - Distributor replace
I recently purchased a 72 Spit IV. The previuos owner replaced the distributor with a Lucas single point with a vacuum advance. From what I can find out, it appears this car came with a Delco Remy D204 with a vacuum retard setup. Thw single Stromberg only has one vacuum port and is on the intake manifold side of the throttle plate, so when I hook up the vacuum I of course get full advance even at idle. I do have the original distibutor but I think the vacuum diaphram is bad, and I am not sure about the bushings, which is why I think he replaced it. Suggestions as to how to make this work or should I repair the original, or start over with a different distibutor. Thanks. Glen

Glen, I don't think you can make the replacement distributer work. If the original was a retard it was meant to advance the timing under low vacuum conditions (probably when running at constant velocity). I doubt you will ever get the performance and gas mileage with your current set up. You probably want to go back to the old one or get a new one. You may want to scrutinize the old one to see if the bushings really are worn. You might be able to use it. Otherwise I would go new. Not knowing the original owners intent, makes it difficult to determine why the change. I have a 68 Spit with dual SU carbs. Good luck with it. Mike Petryschuk Georgetown Ontario

Hi, The best replacement and easy to find is a non-vacuum Mini distributor. It will solve your problem for good. Cheers, JGC
