Triumph Spitfire - Access to wheel bearings
| I have a 1973 MBIV spit, I have a knocking sound coming from the rear and am 99% certain it's the wheel bearing. However even with the correct tool I can not remove the hub. Any ideas? |

| On diagnosing rear end noises, see: Stolen from John Kipping’s catalogue (JK now incorporated into Canley Classics) REAR END NOISES, Non-Rotaflex Knock or rattle on slowing down? Yes >>>>>>>>> No Not the diff. But the U/Js See Note 1 Continuous noise, Yes >>>>>>>>> no change on acceleration Wheel bearings or slowing down Will be louder on one side See Note 2 No Continuous noise, Yes >>>>>>> Loudest on Differential acceleration See note 3 No Get on the net! Notes: 1/ Caused by: A/ Worn U/J Replace B/ Worn Yoke/flange Circlip rubs and causes a shiny ring Replace flange or halfshaft C/ End float in U/J Oversized circlips [Only available from JK – JD] 2/ May be worse cornering. Usually means a new half shaft as well 3/ May disappear on deceleration. Neither one side or the other. Usually a ‘whining’ noise . Knocking, vibration or rattling are NOT caused by the diff. On the basis of the above, and JK knows more about Triumphs than most, you have a U/J problem! If you must have the hub off, the Churchill Hub puller SHOULD remove it. Once you have it as tight as you can (orig.tightened to 120ft/lbs remember) HIT the end bolt HARD with a HEAVY hammer. (Stand clear - it will fly off!) |
