Triumph GT6 - To buy or not to buy!
I've been offered a Mk I GT6 for a grand (1400 with full service and MOT) but I'm unsure as to whether I should buy it or not! It has been sat for some years now and is full of cobwebs and old dry leaves, however it has been kept in the dry and the shell and chassis look good except for a bit of rust showing through under the windscreen and a bit on the rear c pillar. The guy who owns it has spent a lot of money on getting it tidied up but that was a few years ago and it hasnt moved since. I'm looking for a car that i can use daily hence a Triumph where the parts are (relatively!) cheap and easy to source but I don't want to have to completely rebuild it first. Am I biting off more than I can chew or is a GT6 a realistic propositon? What should I look for although I suspect it's too late cos I've already fallen in love with the bloody thing! Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Cheers Simon.

Simon, I would suggest that a car this old, with this history, will not be a reliable daily driver. You are offered a "full service & MoT" for £400? I should think so! For that price, you should get ALL the rubber tubes, water, fuel and brake, replaced as these deteriorate more quickly without use. Ditto the brake seals, and fluid. Also, I'm concerned about the rust under the windscreen. Is it perforating - if so, run, don't walk away. My adice? Buy a 10 year old Escort, to drive to work, and save your money for a better GT6. NEVER buy the first example of a car that you see. Meanhwile, join the TSSC, go to Group meetings. You'll learn more about these cars, and may latch onto a better car there. Good Luck! john

After a good look at the car (and putting my thumb through the floor!) I've decide not to buy it after all - surprise eh?! Thanks for the advice. I'll have to keep an eye out for a better one. It would have been great to go to the tssc meet but I live in Teesside and it's a canny hike to get there! ( This computer thinks I live elsewhere for some reason!)but thanks anyway mate, hope you had fun! Again thanks for the help. Hopefully we'll speak again soon (although I'm now thinking MGB!) Simon

Simon, Very wise! Make contact with your local TSSC Group. You'll find details at the TSSC website: http://www.tssc.org.uk/area.asp?region=north#20010412234817299645458 Good luck! John
