Triumph GT6 - Steering Column bushes

I am trying to replace both top and bottom rubber bushes on my MK111 GT6. I have removed the column but cannot remove the inner shaft nor the bushes any ideas. It seems that the steering lock could be to blame has anyone removed this with problems ??
