MG TD TF 1500 - Wire wheel; spindle?
This winter I plan on refurbishing 5 48 spoke wirewheels and powdercoating them. The directions that I have call for a "spindle" to true them on. Anyone who has done this before have either suggestions or photos? Many thanks Rod

Use an old front swivel axle (TD, TF, MGA and maybe MGB) and clamp it in a vice...

Rod I'd suggest you paint instead of powdercoat the wires. I had mine done on my B years ago. The powder will not flow like paint and after you get them wet )(washing etc.) rust will start steaking at the spoke end and the ferule ends. It wont fill the small seems. I still have one as a spare but replaced all the others with some chrome Daytons. I would recomend it on the steel wheels though

Rod, I "bounced" the idea off my powdercoat guy a few years ago of doing my 48's. (He has done several others for me over the years) His advice was "don't"...he also stated the same reasons as LaVerne does above...said he would paint but not powdercoat wires. I went with Dayton 60's instead. I went wider and love the way the car handles with my fat radials on. "Concourse" not, but it sure changed the way the car rides & handles.

Dave, What is your wheel size and tire size? Steel belted radials? Are the 60's on a TF or TD? Thanks, Mort

I have 165 15 on my car with the Dayton Wires and mine are 72 spoke SS . I love the way mine drives with the tubless radials.

Rod I also talked to my powder guy. He was very anti doing wires for the same reasons mentioned by Laverne. Properly done, paint is best, unless you want to drop 1500 big ones for a set of Daytons. mike michel
