MG TD TF 1500 - Wire Harness cloth wrap

Does anyone have a source for the cloth wrap around the wire harness on a TD? My wires are in pretty good shape but the cloth needs to be replaced and I don't want to spend big $$$ for a new harness.
I searched Moss but no luck.
Thanks,
Mark

The covering is braided around the assembled harness - it cannot be replaced as a "part". However, Rhode Island Wiring can rebraid the cover, to correct or any desired pattern. And, you can add wires or change it anyway you like before they do it. Prices are not bad at all. Good people, good stuff.

Hi Mark,
I wrapped mine in black PVC tape which helps prevent the ingress of oil,

Cheers,

Mark,
I "re-loomed" my harness using nylon mesh. Looks quite period (I think) but does not break down like cloth braid. Got it from: www.digikey.com
(I used this in my other business so had several sizes around my shop.)
Believe it is made by amp. (expandable wire tubing)
Have also used it on some of my period accesories.
(see pic)
If you have an intrest I can take some better pics of mine for you tomorrow and get a part number off on of the rolls. They also sell it now with a "tracer" that look even more period like.
Cheers,
David

I like that nylon mesh look. I would appreciate a few more photos, if you have time. I'll bet other would also.
My TF was rewired in the '70's using a new loom that was PVC wrapped. It is a perfectly good wiring loom, but I long for the look of cloth braid. I would consider covering some visible areas like this if I could. Is it a continuous cylinder or is it open on one side so you can slip it over a length of wire??
Thanks!

I have successfully re-wrapped sections of the harness using black friction tape which is available from hardware stores. It is a woven cloth material with no adhesive unlike slick black electrical tape. I wrap the harness and at the end of the tape retain in from unwrapping with a small black nylon wire tie. It is a fair representation of the original look and easy to do.

To further on David S's recommendation, I used that product on the harness in our TD when I restored the car in the early 80s (at that time I believe it was called Spando Flex and come in several different sizes. In addition to looking good and being oil resistant, it also guards against chafing. DigiKey carries it as does Mouser http://www.mouser.com/ and I believe MCM http://www.mcmelectronics.com/ also carries it. Cheers - Dave

Dave DuBois second web site has a good product for wraping already installed wiring.

3/4 Inch x 50 Ft Flexible Semi Rigid Split Braided Tube

Thanks for all the replies. I really like the nylon look that David posted.

David, do you remember what sizes you used?

There seems to be several sizes starting at 3/8" up to over 1.5" and one says it is expandable up to 2". I was thinking 3/8" would do most of the peripheral wires and the 1/2" would do the main harness.

Hey Mark!
Have a bunch of pictures and info for you.
Ended up writting a small novel with some ideas for ya! Kind of long winded so I hate to post here.
Contact me off the board and I'll get it to you!
Send me an email dsheward "at" gmail "dot" com
Replace the "AT" & "DOT" with @ & .

Most of us quit putting our emails on her due to "spam-bots" and after winning the Nigerian Lottery a couple hundred times it kind of loses the thrill!

I used the nylon tubing on my MGB It is like the old Chinese finger traps, It gets smaller if pulled. One nice thing is that you can make small slices in it and insert branches. It glues well.

There are cloth wraps out there that look ok, but tought to put on unless the wiring is out of the car. And if you are taking it out, Having it rewoven is a better way to go.

The product I used is ALPHA GRP Expandable Braided Polyester Non-Fraying Sleeping.
Mostly ¼” – ½” – 1 ¼” and maybe some 2”? Black.
What I had in my shop was 20 years old so I am sure there are other makers now.
I did see somewhere that they now even make it with color-coded tracers in white/ yellow/ red/ orange & green. I would bet most people would not notice the black with white tracer was not cloth as original!

Small novel & a dozen pic's waiting for you.
