MG TD TF 1500 - Voltage regulator
Good day.....can somebody please explain the difference between the 5 pole and 9 pole voltage regulator and the advantage of one over the other. I just received my new harness from Autospark and it would appear to be for a nine pole, which one was originally fitted to a 1950 TD Many thanks Bob

Hi Bob, The 5 post requires a fuse block in addition to the regulator itself. The 9 post combines the regulator and fuse block into a single unit. There is no difference in the performance of the units. The 1950 TD would have originally had the 9 post. (not sure of the changeover serial no.). When you install the wiring harness you may find that there develops quite a rats nest of wires around the 9 post. It takes a bit of skill to make it look really nice and neat. Cheers, Bob

Maybe this is helpful; I checked the order in which the cables have to connect to the Reg and than taped them is this order around the harnesspart as it was still on the inside of the firewall. Used quite some siliconspray to facilitate an easy passage through the grommet, peeled of the tape and connected the wires. Two pictures to illustrate. Good luck, Huib

Huib, In my many years around automobiles, I've never seen a battery connector like the one on your car. It's a bit unusual being off to the side. Interesting. PJ

My 51 had the nine post as orignal, changed the the 5 as at the time I could not afford the cost of the nine post. Wish I would have not converted, just for looks.
