MG TD TF 1500 - Valve Springs
Can anyone easily tell me the correct valve spring height for an XPAG engine? I'm struggling to put together a TD head and the valve spring height on the asembled head is all over the place. I think the intakes may have too much recession (I put in hardened exhaust seats but not intakes). I can't seem to find the number in the WSM. I don't mean the valve spring pressure to check the condition of the springs themselves, but the height of the keeper and assembled spring from the cylinder head. TIA. Tionm Lange Bar Harbor, Maine

I don't have a figure for you but if I understand correctly the height you want is governed by the length of the valve(stem)? Assuming all valves are the same length, any difference would result from the amount of valve seat recession. If there are big differences that you want to correct, the only solution would be to repair the inlet valve seats?

I don't know about height, but there seem to be issues with "coil bind" with the newer large lobe cams, I would talk to a machine shop with experience on these heads. Or John Twist. George

WSM gives spring pressures "Shut" with lengths for each spring. That would be the as installed design parameters. inner 1.753; outer 1.847. Same for TD & TF but different spring loads. I fail to understand how anyone is installing seat inserts without this information. Certainly anyone installing seats should be able to figure out if the existing seats are within useable tolerance. Given age and past history, all the other relevant parts should be checked for match as well: valves (repro, used, etc), retainers, collets. Swapping parts around and measuring everything will give you any and all variations, and any problem should become obvious. FRM
