MG TD TF 1500 - Tyre pressure, TD
Hi all, What tyre pressure should I run for the TD. 165x15 radials. Manual says 18 psi but seams low for todays world.

25-30 psi.

Thanks George, I will try 26 front and 28 rear. I think that is what I use for the B.

Geoff, Tire pressures depend on how you are driving the car. On a recent long road trip, with 2 up and a loaded rear luggage rack, I put 28 in the rear and 30 in the front. The car handled very well but I thought I could have dropped 2 lbs. front and rear, for a more comfortable ride, and not detract from the road performance. I normally carry 24 front and 22 rear. This gives me a softer ride and does not tranfer a lot of road vibrations into the car. If doing some fast driving without the loads mentioned, I would add 2 lbs front and rear. My aim is to preserve the car, and not shake it to pieces. This is a personal preference, and you should test these pressures for yourself. George

| Here's a copy of what I received from Lawrie Alexander a few years. It's what I follow: 22lbs is an interesting number to be published - if you look in the original TD factory manual, it says "It is of the utmost importance that the tyres be carefully maintained at a constant pressure of 18lbs. per sq. in." ! I've always found that, with bias ply tires of the original size, 22lbs in front and 24lbs in the rear gave the best combination of wear, handling and ride. With radial tires of the size you are using, I recommend 24lbs in front, 26lbs in the rear for general use. Add 4 lbs at each end if you are going on a long, fast drive, and increase the differential from front to rear to 4lbs if you are carrying a suitcase on a luggage rack (esp. the low-mount rack.) | Thanks guys. Lawrie is a friend of mine and I trust his judgement. This will be a 2 1/2 hour straight road trip so I think I will start out with 26f / 28r and see how it goes. I can lower it if I need to. I need to get new tyres on the car also tomorrow! Cheers. |

Geoff, What tires did you find to fit out there???

I run 32 psi in my radials on the TF. 24 psi in the bias plys (haven't been on the car for years) 15/18 psi in the 4WD on dry sandy beaches. 75/80 psi in rented Lincolns to keep them cornering robustly!
