MG TD TF 1500 - Transmission rebuild
Hi, I received my new first motion shaft and installed it again after having checked and cleaned all components of the gearbox. I have almost completed the rebuild (thanks to the guide on the website of Bob McCluskey), just have to drop in the 3 top selector balls and springs and the top cover. However when I checked the function of gear shifting, all goes well in first, second and fourth gear, but in third gear I came across a problem. When shifting to third the resistance to turn the first motion shaft is very heavy. This happens now and then, sometimes i can just turn it with 2 fingers but sometime it turns so hard that its almost impossible to turn with one hand. I have tried shifting in third not turning the first motion shaft, and also shifting whilst turning the first motion shaft, still in both cases the problem shows up now and then. Anyone has a idea what I did wrong? Thanks Dirk

Can't help with your gearbox issue, but I do want to thank you for the lead to Bob McCluskey's rebuild web site. Looks like another very valuable resource. BobbyG

Bobby, You are so right...what an amazing piece of work! He even has an animated cut-away showing how everything move during shifts! Remarkable! http://members.optusnet.com.au/bobmccluskey/index.html

Bobby G, Bob's site and many others are on my list. Go to this web site: http://www.ttalk.info/NeelTDwebsites.html Thanks to Bud Krueger. Regards, Jim

Jim, I'm familiar with ttalk.info, it's another mine of information. I need to spend more time probing deeper and deeper into the many "tunnels" there. Thanks for the efforts! BobbyG

Hi Dirk, here are my thoughts on the difficulty in turning the 1st motion shaft when in 3rd while in all other gears everything is OK OK. When the gearbox is in 3rd this gear is essentially locked onto the mainshaft via the striking dog. The only places where there could be drag are on the shifting forks, 4th gear synchro dragging on the 1st motion shaft or the 2nd gear synchro dragging on the 2nd gear cone. My guess is the latter as the first two possibilities seem very unlikely. Does the mainshaft move rearward slightly when 3rd is engaged? This may force the 2nd gear forks to move the 2nd gear synchro onto the cone. Was the 3-4 sliding hub installed with its internal boss toward the front? If the 2nd gear synchro is dragging on the cone and 3rd gear is engaged then the 1st motion shaft has the impossible task of trying to turn the mainshaft simultanously at two different speeds and will "lock up" until the 2nd gear syncro slips on its cone. I hope this is of some help. Cheers, Hugh Pite
