MG TD TF 1500 - transmission

I have opened the case on the transmission and it actually looks great inside. I have made it through the entire rebuild so far without sockets but it looks like there is no way to remove the bell housing without them. I suppose I will have to order a set. My question is that the First motion shaft moves in and out about 1/4 inch and the thin bearing guard in front of it seems loose. Is this the proper function? It would be great to only have to replace the front and rear seal.

Thanks,

I don't think the first motion shaft should haved any in and out movement. A little up and down maybe. It is a ball bearing that should be securely fastened to the shaft, and that type of bearing should have zero in and out movement. Been as long time but I thinkl if you unbolt the bellhousing you are looking right at the bearing. George

rob, i agree with george. i do not have a spec, but i do not recall any end play in the first motion shaft.
