MG TD TF 1500 - TF windscreen fitting

I was quite proud of myself after fitting the trim and dash, it looked really good. Now for the windscreen. Oh, Oh!

Does anyone know a clever way of fitting the nuts to the chrome screws that hold the windscreen on without taking the dash and trim off?

AJ,

That looks great. Can you please share any tips and pointers on installing the dash? What is the best order to do it in - install everything first (including glove boxes, guages, etc), wire it and then put the entire dash in, or is there a better/different way?

I am just about to start this project and would really appreciate hearing how best to proceed from others who have been there.

Thanks!

Hi AR & TM,
AR - I think you're going to have to remove the inside panels to have access to the nuts for the windscreen brackets.
TM, it's been just a yr since I did what you are about to do. I'll att. 3 pix, 1 here, 2 in the next msgs, showing my steps. I installed the glove boxes on the dash, then installed the dash panel, then installed the pre-wired instrument panel.

Hm, Guess I knew that I'd have to at least remove the dash. I'm hoping that when I've done that I'll be able to ease the trim back to get my hands behind them to do the nuts up. Tomorrow's job!

I installed my dash pretty much the same way as AWP. I installed the instruments in the centre panel before it was attached to the dash. I then wired the panel up and then installed it into the dash board. I fitted direction indicator and then the glove boxes. This is a tight fit so you need to make sure there's enough room. You might want to trial fit the indicator and glove box before you fit the centre panel. I then rested the panel upside down on a cardboard box straddling the transmission and wired the dash to the car. You then need to "force" the dash into place and screw the centre bracket to the frame under the dash. There is a captive nut in the frame under the scuttle that the bracket screws into. Make sure the threads are good before you start otherwise you'll need to take it all apart again.

I think you're screwed A J. The thought of dropping the steering column, the dash and the side panels has kept me from replacing my glass for the last three years. In retrospect I wished I had welded in captive nuts for the windscreen pillars when I had the tub down to bare metal.

Thanks LaVerne. Captive nuts. Great idea. Now you tell me!!! Too late.

Dash out and back in again. Had to drop the steering column but I managed to do it without disturbing the side panels, not easy but do-able. Didn't really take that long. Half a day and nothing damaged. Hopefully the electrics still work.
