MG TD TF 1500 - TF Underdash Shield
Does anyone know why Moss and Abingdon get so much money for the TF underdash shield? From reading the archives, it appears that it is a cardboard piece that is molded. I have the metal bracket for the thing. Near as I can tell, most owners leave them off anyway. At $127.00, it seems out of line. I think I may cobble up something simpler. Mike D.

I would assume they might sell one or two a year, if their lucky, and the profit margin is probably zilch. I agree the prices of these parts seem quite excessive, but we must remember two things, (1) they are a business trying to stay alive in these trying times and (2) we should be happy that someone is still making these parts for our cars. No one in the business of selling MG or various other vintage British car parts is getting rich. JMHO. PJ

Here in England the good news is the shield is "only" £42.85 ($66), the bad news is they don't have any! I have had one on order for 6 months and Moss tell me that they only get a supply when they have "sufficent" orders. No definition of sufficient was forthcoming. If you really want one Mike I will see if two is "sufficent". Even with postage to Colorado it will be less than $127. Regards Mike

Be sure to check where your knees actually are when driving...I couldn't drive with the shield...

I got two a few years back from Brown & Gammons. Both are still installed on the cars.

| Would not be that hard to make one if you found the right type of board. Here is a pic of my original TF one. Matthew.

Thanks Gents, I did not even know what one looked like! I really appreciate Matthew's pictures. I am now into the interior and his pictures are invaluable! I just search for his name in the archives and I am all set with the assembly pictures for various parts of the car. I will quit whining about the price as it is kind of a complex piece and if they are getting no orders, that explains it. I am grateful to get the parts I do buy, as this car was a barn disaster when I brought it home. The tip on driving without one is excellent, as I am 6' 2" tall, so there is a good chance I can't use one anyway. For now, I am going to just put it back together without one to see how well I fit. Case closed for now! Mike D.

Remember that the TF cover is pretty skinny and just covers the center area. The TF cover does nicely hide the wiring/cables, and if I recall is pretty easy to remove. The TD cover goes side to side, and definitely interferes with the knees and is a royal pain to remove. Any TF owners out there care to comment? George

| George, I am 6'1" and the underdash panel does not interfere with my knees! It is easy get off and back on if the underdash metal frame is set up well.Looks much more tidy when in place. The screws(and cup washers) holding the fibre panel onto the metal sub frame are the same type which hold the windscreen frame onto the side extensions ie. Phillips head, raised, countersunk. Incidentally, any noise/vibration from this area of the car can be reduced considerably by slipping sponge rubber sleeving over the Tachometer and Speedo cables. | Mike D As it was some time since I checked with Moss (Europe) the status of my order for a shield I just gave them a call. They now have firm orders for 33! So it would seem that lots of people apart from me want to fit one. Moss have now put in an order for 50 to their supplier (who I was told was in England. So we do still manufacture some things!)and they hope to have them in three to four weeks. The offer to get you one still stands if you change your mind and decide you want to fit one. Mike |

I took the under dash cover off my TD because it is original and I wanted to have quick access to the original wiring under the dash. I am making sure the under dash cover is kept in a good place and will have it for the next care taker. David.......

Hi Mike et al, Thanks for the offer on the shield. I checked with Moss here and they have zero in stock, and could not tell me if it comes with hardware, a frame, or what. So I did not order one here. They did not know when any more were coming and they had a back order for one. That's a great idea to pad the cables to reduce noise. Mike Sutton, if you want to contact me out of BBS to get one, my e-mail is mwdavis at paul cat india sally yellow sally dot net. I'm not sure how to work out anything internationally, so it might get way too complicated and cause too much work for you! Thank you, Mike D.

TD, not TF, but a parts car still had one (dissasembled) that I sold last year, and a 52 still had one in place that I worked on this spring. Generally a nuisance but thought it was cool that it had remained there after all these years. Bob

Mate a parts supplier in Aus has these produced locally. Email sportsparts@bigpond.com Cant remember what he charged for mine, havent got that far into the rebuild to fit it to date, quality is AOK. Graeme

FWIW I bought one recently from NTG in Ipswich (UK). It took some fettling around the bolt holes and top edge to get it to fit, but makes things tidier. Ian B
