MG TD TF 1500 - TF tub to frame bolts
| If you look at the list of bolts (see photo) that attach the tub to the frame on Bud K's TTalk web site (the list is from TA Terry), there are 15 bolts listed, but there are only 8 obvious places to attached the tub to the frame. The two 3" bolts on the list go to the rear holes (through the rear bottom rail)and 6 others go through obvious holes. Where do the other 7 shorter bolts go? How thick is packing between the tub and frame? What is the size of the packing pieces? (my car came with none). I saw no bolts for the running boards on the list. Where are they listed? Thanks for help. I want to get this right. Tyler

Some go on the frame towers in front of the fire wall. But 7? Odd number. Hmmmm. PJ

Tyler, I have a (being reassembled) TD tub sitting on a framework in my basement. I'll go and take a look after I have a cup of coffee. I suspect that they are some of the bunch that go on the lower edge of the firewall. Bud

Tyler, http://www.ttalk.info/td_body_bolts.htm is another place to look. Even though it's TD data, it's probably very applicable to a TF. I counted 22 bolts attaching the outside edge of the firewall and 14 at the inside (toeboard) area, some of which go into captive nuts. Good luck. Bud

The packing thickness may be different in every location. Thicker at the far rear tips the door hinge pillar forward and lowers the door in the opening. Thicker under the hinge pillar does the reverse, etc. The running board bolts have to be long enough to go through the main side rail and metal flange of the tub- I don't know specifically. George

thanks Bud, The TATerry list has been really helpful, but a bit confusing also. I'd like to see a better explanation of where exactly some of the listed hardware is used. Unfortunately, the PO of my car disassembled/reassembled several things on the car (fenders, running boards, bonnet panels, engine)and mixed up the replacement hardware pretty well. It's a real hodge podge of different length bolts in the fenders, etc. Thank god he stuck to BSF, and didn't force SAE or metric into the holes. Still not clear on packing. I guess several small pieces of material fit between the frame and tub where the tub is bolted down. Tyler

Tyler, the packing is another name for shims that are used between the tub wood and the mounting points on the frame itself. Additional thicknesses will have an effect on the twisting of the tub and will effect the closing of the doors. Bud

I use one rubber neoprene washer with 5/16" fender washers at all the tub mounting points. Place the rolling chassis on a level floor and use the washers as shims until the door fit is good and there are no gaps between the tub and the chassis. Some spots only have one washer, others have three or four. -David

David, is the 5/16 fender bolts you used a standard outside diameter.

Richard, To answer your question: 5/16" inside diameter. 5/16 fender washers. Fender washers are the ones with a much larger outside diameter. Any hardware store should have 5/16" fender washers. I also use one neoprene washer too. They are exactly the same size as the fender washer. The neoprene washer provides a little cushion effect. This is how I did both the TD and the TF. I used 5/16 BSF bolts, nuts and lock washers. -David
