MG TD TF 1500 - TF toolbox body plate

Regarding a LHD TF-1500. The toolbox cover has four holes
To attach the body type and number plate.

Does the plate go on the inside of the lid ( underside)?
Does the plate go on the driver's side or passenger?
Is the plate orientated to be read from the front of the car?
Is the underside of the cover to be gloss black?
Where do you get 4 small aluminum rivets to attach plate?
Thanks
R.T. Walsh

Mine is on the underside of the lid, on the driver's side, and can be read from the front with the lid open. And it is black underside, but I have a black TF...Now, a caveat here is that my car may not be correct, as I have found more than one deviation from the norm! Others may have a differing finding. As to rivets, I just find them at hardware stores here and there. Mike

A photo of the original plate, paint and rivetts on my Birch Grey TF 1500. Top of the plate is towards the front of the car and on the left side, underside. Paint is gloss, but does not show in the photo very well.

My lid must have been turned around, as the brass plate is on the right underside and reads opposite from yours Matthew. In other words, you read mine while standing in front looking back. Happy to know how it's supposed to be. PJ

Matthew is right, and I should not go by memory. Mine has the top toward the front too, so it is read from the rear of the car. Mike

No guarrantee of course that the factory was consistent.

...they started putting it there on later TDs after moving it from the firewall....don't have the car number it started at....

Mathew,
Thank you for the picture of the plate. I found some aluminum rivets to secure my plate. I am unsure which direction the rivets go. Is the factory rivet head on the inside or outside of the box? If you have the opportunity can you photograph (and post) the outside appearance of the rivets?

I appreciate your time - having an original car as you do is a great resource for "correctness".
Thanks

My unerstanding is that they did not use rivets, but small brass screws and square nuts to attach the name plate.

The heads on the rivets on my TF seem to be on the plate side(inside), although it is such a good job of riveting it is difficult to tell.
Larry Brown

...seems to be rivets....

Yes, heads on the inside.

Louis, your description is correct for the ID plate on the TF firewall but the TF body plates were done at the body works hence different system.

Say guys;
This body number on the TF must be stampled somewhere else on the car also. Where can I find it?

No other body number that I am aware of Tom, just the chassis number near the left-front horn. Sometimes a chalked batch number turns up under the door trim.

Tom, don't know about a later TF, but for general info on my TD the body number was stamped into the upper side of the lower wood body rail that ran under the right side door. It was covered until disassembly.

Mine are like Matthews with the heads of the rivets showing on the plate side and the outside of the box has the hammered part of the rivet showing with a flat surface, no rounding of the rivet. PJ

Paul J

Outside exposed rivet.

Bud K;
Thanks. Just what I wanted to know. I'll look for it when I repaint. Think my car has all original timbers.
