MG TD TF 1500 - TF Register...?

I'm sure that there is a comprehensive register of the TFs produced as there is for other models.

A good friend of mine is looking at a December '53 TF Chassis number 16561, Car number HDC26/2108 and engine number XPAG-TF-35992.

He's told that it is a 'matching numbers' car and before he pays good money for it, I'd like to be sure that it is. He's quite some distance from the car so is not in a position to view it. However the pictures look good and if the numbers are genuine, then he could well become another of the MG fold... :-)

Thanks in anticipation,

Mark.

According to the MGCC T-Register search TF2108 was built on 31/12/1953 and was fitted with engine no XPAG/TF/31958. The colour of thr car was Dark Red (the C in the car number).

So the chassis number listed for the TF in question (16561) is not the chassis number from the Register Site???

No, I'll bet that that is the Body Number from the plate on the inside of the tool box.

The "Chassis number" is 2108, ie: Car number HDC/26 2108
from the plate on the firewall.(This is the US Serial Number or VIN #)

Check the engine number on this plate with the octagon plate on the engine to see if original engine

The chassis number "should be" 2108 to match the ID plate car number. 16561 is not a TF chassis number, nor is it the right body number for that chassis range. 16561 'could' be a TD chassis number or some other mis-identified vin number. 2108 was imported new into Sydney.

Contact me if you wish to Mark. I would like to update my Australian TF Register.

Although having the engine that left the factory is a good thing, engines certainly did have a way of being replaced.... I wouldn't pass on a really nice example only because the XPAG happened to be different....(assuming it is a 1250)....
I mean, its not exactly like MG 'matching numbers' really match...!!!

IMHO: Not a deal breaker (wrong engine) but a good bargaining tool for pricing if seller is claiming matching numbers. Personally I am always a little leary of cars with shinny new vin plates and neatly engraved numbers on them. Factory plates were "struck" or "punched" and not always very neat.

Mark,
engine number 35992 is four prior to mine (35996) but I have seen it in the English T Register against chassis no 5998 and build date as June 1954. Good huntin'

XPAG 35992 came from TF5998 which was for sale last year.

Thanks for all your help guys... Peter (my friend who is looking at the car) will email you Matthew directly to discuss things with you. I may get to go and see the car with Peter later this week if I can get the time off work...

Cheers,
Mark.
