MG TD TF 1500 - TF pedal box help
I need advice on removing the pedals from my TF, logic says to drift the shaft out from the outside in, however logic is not budging it.The chassis is stripped. Don TF 4887

G'Day Don, I had similar problems with my RHD TD many years ago. You are fortunate that you are doing this nasty task with a stripped down chassis. I started with an illustrated parts list to make sure I understood what I was dealing with part-wise. Any old Moss catalog or their online view will do the trick. Not knowing the condition of your chassis, remember heat is one of your best tools. One of the most poorly designed parts is the center shaft. I had one modified with a center hole drilled by a machine shop with grease outlets in the area of the clutch and brake pedal bushing. The shaft is fitted with a grease fitting on the outboard side of the frame or chassis. I There is an abundance of information in the archives of this BBS. Good Luck.

Thanks Jim, the archive doesn't give me a good feeling on this matter, as everything looks and feels OK I might leave it well enough alone. Regards, Don TF 4887

If you can wiggle the clutch pedal at all sideways, the bushing is shot, and the pedal shaft bushings are probably bad, as well. Sorry - it's an ugly job. I'm just doing one right now... Tom Lange Bar Harbor, Maine

Mr Walker, If the pedals feel tight, I would just clean the assembly up and then see if the shaft will except grease in the fitting. If it does and all the bushings are getting lubricated, I'd just leave it alone. As others have said, it's about the worst job you'll run into restoring the chassis. Only good thing about it is, it's a once in a lifetime job! Thank goodness! PJ

Don, I removed the shaft from my TD (same pedal box as the TF) by removing the outer circlip and then belting with a club hammer, using a drift of slightly smaller diameter. I drove it inwards, as the car was fully assembled and access from the inside was difficult. Surprisingly, the only things that needed replacement were the pedal bushings. If your shaft has rusted into the bushing in the chassis, you may find that you drive the bushings out with the shaft. Matt

| D J Walker, If you send me your address I will send you an extensive write up on refurbishing the pedal shaft and bushings. This covers both the greased LHD shaft and bushings and the non-greased RHD shaft. The article appeared in "mgTalk" Jan. 2011 It suggests that the RHD shaft be modified so it can be greased. | Thanks Matt, I was hoping someone would actually tell me if you can drift it out from the outside to inside, you have answered my Q. It does appear seized in the outer bush. Don, my email address should now be visable. PJ, thanks also, the wear is minimal but I would like to replace after a lot of pondering! Don Walker Adelaide Hills Sth.Oz TF4887 |
