MG TD TF 1500 - TF ignition switch
I purchased a new barrel for my '54 TF ignition switch, but I cannot see how to remove the old barrel from the original switch. There are two holes on opposite sides of the switch body, but I cannot see anything in the holes to depress that would release the barrel. Any suggestions would be welcome.

What ever you do, do NOT try easing the old barrel forward by levering with a screwdriver. I did just that, thinking there might be a circlip holding it in and was rewarded with a large section of the Bakelite breaking off. Moss said they could no longer obtain the original switch so I had to use a Mini switch to replace the one I had bodged! Regards Mike

Even with a large section of the body missing I still don't know how to remove the barrel. Hopefully our American cousins, who seem to delight in stripping our post vintage thoroughbreds down to the smallest nut and bolts, will give you an answer. Regards Mike

There is a pin in the tumbler under one of the holes on the rear of the switch, Use a a drill bit or similar small rod thru one of the two holes to depress the pin in the tumbler while pushing on the hex extension on the back of the switch, The tumbler should slide forward and out of the housing Try both holes, pin is under one, 50/50 chance!

Sorry I had a senior moment, The hex does not stick out of the back of the TF ignition switch. ( I think it is a Jaguar switch that does, it uses the same tumbler but with a slip-on extension on the back) You must have the key in place in the tumbler, then depress the pin and use the key to help withdraw the tumbler.
