MG TD TF 1500 - TF front side rail wood replacement
| During the restoration of my TF I noticed that the front side rail wood (inner and outer) on the rhs was rotted. Item numbers 13 and 14 on page 30 of the Moss catalogue. It was easy to remove the rotten wood with a chisel but how hard is it to install new wood pieces. Does anyone have any advice or recommended procedures to use or is it just a matter of trying to fit them in the slot. BTW the lhs and top rail are in good shape, so I only need to do the RHS. Any advice much appreciated, Andy

Could try making some cardboard templates and taking them to your timber supplier to purchase the right size wood. Then it is a matter of slowly fitting and shaping the new timber. May have to improvise some new hidden brackets since it will not have the structural integrity of the original build. How are the bottom main rails? Matthew.

Andy, Can it be assumed that you are going to try to replace the wood without any further body dissasembly?? SPW

Andy, The wood is actually two pieces, as you said. I think you can get item 13 to fit into the tub without further disassembly, it will go straight up from the bottom, and screw to the metal body frame that runs from front to rear (item 50 on the next page). It will require shaping if you buy from Moss, but not too much. Then, item 14 gets slipped in between the firewall and the tub wood, and secured with screws to item 13. It will determine the placement and fit of your side panels. Drill to match the firewall. It might serve to keep the tub intact as you install these pieces as most of the proper shape is already there. You are positive the rest of the wood is OK? warmly, dave

Thanks guys. I'm not planning on taking the car apart any more than it is at the moment. Like many projects it started off as a small repaint job and has turned into a complete restoration except for the tub is still on the frame. The rest of the wood is OK which seems strange. The other side and top rail are both in great shape. There is minor rot in one end of one of the main bottom rails but not enough to warrant replacing the entire timber. I've ordered the pieces from Moss and noted their warning about they will need shaping to fit. Thanks for the advice and I will have to make up some additonal brackets to make up for the structural integrity. Andy
