MG TD TF 1500 - TD wiper motor

Anyone have some good pictures of a completed wiper motor assembly for a TD? Looking for pictures of the spacers between the windshield and motor and some pictures of the wiper arms and blades. Any details on the correct paint would also be helpful. I'm ready to move forward on this mini project. Thanks in advance!!

RK,
Here are a few shots. Not very good quality. Maybe someone with more expertise and better camera will post.

Rich, what are you looking for? Bud

Check out Dave Braun's Restoration site. He has a part dedicated to the wiper motor.

Rich,

Maybe this photo can help.

Thanks for the photos, they were all very helpful. The detailed layout that Jesus put on there was one I was hoping someone had. So it looks like the cover gets chrincle black paint and the body just has a flat black? Thanks again, I think I got what I need.

Rich,

Glad to be helpful. To be honest, I downloaded the photo from the internet (don’t remember whether in this site), so the credit for somebody else. And I am not sure if the motor housing finish is the original... Perhaps some friend can tell.

OK, I picked up some of my new parts yesterday for my wiper install. I have new arms, blades and other small hardware. I should have it all together by tomorrow? Apparently the blades I had originally were after market and are different then the ones I got from Moss. Trying to figure out how the heck they go together. I can see in the pictures Mort provided that it is the same setup as the new ones I just picked up. Perhaps Mort or someone else can get me a picture a little closer? I will provide a picture of what I am dealing with. I have a good idea of how they may go together but I want to be sure. The last thing I would want is it to come apart and scratch my new windshield. Thanks guys!

Hi Rich,
I still have the original wiper motor for my TD. Both it and it's replacement have the crinkle finish on all the metal motor covering. The flat black finish in the picture, should have the crinkle finish as well. Unless you are plan on entering a concours with your car, I don't think it is a big item. There is missing in the photo, a small round felt washer that fits in the bell of the outside brass plate, that seals the drive shaft.

Rich,

The tab on the blades go through the wiper arm slot. The rubber stop goes into the cirular tap and the flap of the rubber stop goes against the blade to hold it in place.

The cotter slips into the hole in the end of the linkage rod (chrome, not shown)

Hope this helps.

I was sure that would never last....but 7 years and the little rubber thing is still in place....

Again some great pictures, Thanks Mort & Gordon! Sure seems like this will be a very sloppy fit? But if that is the way it goes then what do you do?! I will probably never use them anyways. Thanks for the kind words on the site Gordon. I am going to work on a gallery page shortly to just have random pictures of the completed car.

I thought those of you that helped me through this mini project would like to see the almost end result! I still have yet to hook up the wires. I stripped back the gray insulation and found a yellow/red/and bare wire showing. I wasn't sure what do do with that. The bar connecting the two wipers is bare brass at this time. A new bar is back ordered at Moss right now. I might try another source or suck it up and have this one chromed, I hardly thought it would be worth it as I can get a reproduction for $30. Not sure where I will go with that one just yet. The rubbers that hold the blades to the arms are pretty shakey, but once they are resting on the windshield I can see how they flip flop back and forth and are a bit more solid. I agree with Gordon, I wouldn't think the rubbers would hold up for long! Anyway, thanks again guys! I already have a new thread in mind I will be starting soon, my next mini project! :)

Regards,
Rich

Rich, they sell a telephone wire for the purpose now. Twist the two copper wires together and connect them under one terminal of the wiper motor. Strip the braided shielding wire and connect it to the other terminal on the wiper motor. At the other end, twist the two copper wires together and find a green wire under the dash (ignition switch, fused) to hook them up to. Take the braided shielded wires and connect to a good ground point. Basically, you are using the twisted wires as a single wire, and the braided shielding as the other. Optionally (but strongly recommended) tin the ends of the wires with solder and apply a dielectric silicon grease to all connections on the car.

Beautiful job, by the way.

warmly,
dave
