MG TD TF 1500 - TD running great . Bang . Dead. Like switch off.

I just cleaned gas filter, then started my 52 TD up. Running great for 10 minutes. Then it was like someone turned the key off. No sputter, no warning. Off. Now it will not start.????

What gas filter? Bud

I have a glass bowl before the pump. Been there twenty years without a hitch

Hey 364,

You'll notice that we use or given names on this board. No need to use acronyms or hide in the closet.

Welcome. Glad if we ca help you get/keep your TD/TF running.

....if no sputter at all.... I would think electrical..... did the ignition light come on when it quit? Does the ignition light come on when you turn on the switch?
gblawson(gordon- TD27667)

Mr. "4",
(get to know you better I'll call you "3")
My first question would be how "bad" was the old filter? Running for 10 minutes is too long for just fuel in line and/or floats.
If the old filter was nasty maybe fuel delivery was a bit "slow"? Nice clean filter ...more draw on the tank and sucked up a piece of rust / crap against the filter "in" the tank clogging it?
Hows you pump "ticking"?
Normal?
Fast?
Not at all?
David Sheward

Mr. 4 by chance did your work involve anything on the left side of the car? if so, did the gen tach drive ground your distributor point wire? regards, tom

If I could figure out how to change the name they gave me I would. Bill

The TD was running great. It is not the fuel bowl or gas. It was running , great idle, great pick. No sputter, no bucking . Just per fact. It just quit. Like some turned the key off. Plenty of gas in the bowl. Pump ticking great. By the way. I have never used your type and talk. Only used this net years ago to buy parts. So I am really sorry about the number name. I justbre signed and that is what they named me. I have no ideal where it came from on or how to change it. I am reall sorry for alo f the confussion. My name is bill. Call 1. 2. 3. 4. Who cares. I just wanted a answer to my questio. I am sorry I asked .. Bill. Now I wil figure out how to get off of this net. I have two MGTD. 52,s. Bill

Bill,
Give us some more to go on ..we are here to help!
Step one ...let's figure out if the pump is running.
Can you hear it ticking?
David Sheward

Ok...gas in carbs and pump is ticking.
Is the engine turnning over, but just won't start?
(Starter running?)
David Sheward

BTW :
At the top of this page click on the "Customise" and you should be able to edit your profile.
Many of us do not put the email in there because "spambots" get hold of it and start sending junk mail.
We really are nice folks here and will help if we can.
David Sheward

Did you open up the valve in the bowl assembly that one usually closes when they clean the bowl?

Welcome to the Board,, we are glad to help,,, look at the jpg below to find out how to change 364 to Bill,,
sorry 'bout the small text,,, the customize button is up in the upper right,,

STEVE WINCZE

Bill,
Do you have spark at the plugs?? One possibility might be that your condenser suddenly died??????

Waiting for Irene in CT,

Remove one of the float chamber tops and make sure there is fuel and that the float is bobbing.
George Butz

Bill, Then there is the notorious faulty rotor, an easy check if you have another old one laying around. Or a new red one.
Bob
R.AF. Robert Finucane

PS- over the years I have found fuel starvation is gradual- such as dropping two cylinders first, then stopping. Sudden would make me think ignition. George

Thanks for th info on name change. Changed name and state. Any here are the things I tried. Both carb bowls removed and cleaned, All screen filters clean
Ned. Pump working fine. Checked it different ways. I checked coil. I did not get spark between points when I checked. No spark at plugs. Checked plugs. I was letting run after checking excelleration etc. And all of a sudden. it stop dead. No warning. No sputter. There was gas in carbs etc. I tried starting it. Strong battery. Strong starter. Checked fuses. Turn on the key. Pump works great. Spark at coil. I ordered a new condenser and point set and rotor. Cap is excellent. I never had this happen before. So There you go. Bill c
Bill C

Bill,
By chance not a new dizzy cap is it?
There have been some bad caps as well as rotors out there latley. (I returned 2 bad caps!)
Where in Ohio are you? I'm about 30 east of Columbus.
Have spares if your close!
Not a great mechanic ...but pretty good with electrics if you need some help in that department.
Cheers,
David (Thornville Ohio)
David Sheward

Dave,
Pretty good with electronics??????????????? How about REAL GOOD !!!!!!!!

Bill,
New points and condensor should do it!!

Going back to Tom Peterson's question - did you check if the tach drive gearbox on the back of the generator has rotated over against the primary terminal of the distributor. That will stop the engine dead in its tracks like yo describe. Cheers - Dave D. (as opposed to Dave S. and Dave B.)

PS you will find that you need a score card to keep track of the Daves on this site.
David DuBois

99.9% electrical issue, as fuel issues almost never cause engine to instantly quit....Look for broken or loose wire, or dead short....My first thought is a coil-connection problem. Look closely at the wire to the dizzy , from the coil, and the ground wire to the coil.
Edward
E.B. Wesson

Ed,
Think Bill said has spark at coil ...but not at plugs?
So shorted on tach drive (as mentoned), coil wire, dizzy cap, rotor, points or condensor?
Working back through those he should be up & running soon.
Sooner if he is close to me and my spares get him going!
David Sheward

Thanks everyone. I am visiting grad kids in Cincinnati. Heading home Saturday. Going back to Cleveland parts may be thereby then. Thanks you all , you are great. Checked I checked tack drive first thing. Did not notice it touching. But still will not start. Will let you all know , if it starts with new points and condenser. Bill c. I will use cap and rotor from other TD when I return. Bill c

Bill, if you need any other parts you might look up David Zyp who is right there in Cincy. I am pretty sure he is a Moss dist. and carries odds and ends at his shop.
Richard Taylor TD3983

DZ is a great guy!
Taking I-71 back up?
If you decide to take the "senic route" I70 to I77 stop in for a cold one. (Exit 132 off I-70)
Let us know what happens. Might still make a pillgamage to Warren this summer in the TF...not far from Clevland if you don't get sorted out.
