MG TD TF 1500 - TD gastank ? anybody have one?

Went to a car show labor day. First one in a few years. Followed my uncle in his 1937 Chevy and his friend in his 1948. Fun drive up country roads and turned some heads on the way. (I was the only one with turn signals!)

Met a nice couple that just purchased a TD at the show. It has a leaking gas tank so not runable.
Told them I would ask here:
Anybody have a good spare tank at reasonable cost they want to sell?

Shot of the cars at the show.

Why the crank, Dave?

Scott,
Only British car there. In the past everyone ask why there is a "hole" in the bumper so I put it in there.
Besides ...kind of looks like a wind-up toy sitting next to my uncles 37! The bonnet on the TF is almost as tall as his fender.
Had fun ...but if I go next year I'm taking my own silverware. Ever try to cut a 2" thick pork chop with a plastic knife & fork?

Have you considered cutting out the rear of the tank and putting in a fuel cell. Might be cheaper

Is the tank leaking or is it the fuel sender. Usually it's the sender and the gaskets cause it. Use BLACK
sealer to stop it.Only one thats Gasoline proof, Sealing the tank sometimes stops leaking if not the sender gasket

I have a spare tank, but I would want someone to look at it before I would sell it as a good tank. It has been up in the rafters for about 6 years.

Where are you in Ohio? I am in Cincinnati.

Described to me as "leaking at seam" on the side.
Said he has removed the side panel.
I actually have not seen it yet.
Just trying to help a new owner that was in somewhat state of shock at cost of a new one!

Rick, I am about 30 east of Columbus. My "new friends" are close in Pataskla .
Before you go to trouble of having it checked let me get with him. Assuming it would be good ...got a ball park price I could pass on to him?

David

No idea on what the price should be if the tank is good. Suggest a fair price.

Rick ,
I haven't a clue either. Never had to buy one. (yet! LOL)
Anybody?
Definitly NOT trying to "flip" it for proffit...just help a new owner get the car on the road.
I think Dwight is looking into his options at this point. (repair/replace/new) I haven't seen the car yet, but since he is close to my house that could happen in the near future.

Tom's concept of installing a fuel cell intrest me.
Anybody out here done this? I do recall there have been some "problems" with some of the sealent systems used since the oil companies have decided to make fuel out of anything they get their hands on these days.

My "guess" would be cutting the rear of the tank, removing the baffles to install the cell? Would that be a "solid cell" or some type of "bladder"? Seems one might not have to destroy the paint you "see" that way...assuming the paint is nice. Is this "solid thinking"?

Hope to see Dwight pop up here on the board soon.
At that point I'll just shut my pie-hole, sit back and watch where it goes!

Looking inthe fuel sender and the filler holes, there doesn't appear to be any pitting - actually is fairly clean inside. Pulling a vacuum with a shop vac and plugging the holes draws the flat panels in. I would coat the tank with a modern sealer.

Rick,
Thanks much ...I heard from the TD owner and he said he is going to try to clean (Boil Out) the old tank and repair it.
It is nice to know there is one close if that doesn't work out for him.
Hope I didn't put you throough too much hassle getting it down.
David Sheward

Dave,

If its any concern; I had a spare gas tank for my PA that I traded for equivalent value of $400.

Abingdon shows a new TD tank for $949.45.

I have used an inspection camera and the inside looks good. If he is interested after pursuing the repair, I would let this go to him for $300 with a new Moss sending unit included. I would be willing to meet at Jeffersonville.

Think he is reading the post now ...but I will let him know.
Thanks

If you are still looking for a tank I have one that has a slit in it from an accident long ago but it should be an easy repair. If you want it you can have it but it would have to ship from SoCal. I'll be glad to email photos if you would like. Other than the slit the tank isn't in bad condition. It has not fittings, sending unit, or side panels.

Tim ,
Thanks passed the info on to Dwight. (The TD owner "looking").
Last I heard he thought he was going to try and repair the seam on one on the car.
Still haven't been over to see the car, been working and weather has been nastie around here.
I'll be taking my little "magnet on a stick" with me to get a better idea of the shape it is in!
My fear is if a seam let go the tank might be trashed.
Think the car sat for quite some time, possible with empty tank.

"Rust-free original Fuel Tank in excellent condition."

eBay listing: 160652871470

I have no personal knowledge of this part or of the seller.
