MG TD TF 1500 - TD exhaust bracket

There is a TD exhaust bracket on e-bay (item # 310336582895) that it says attaches to the gear box. My TD is disassembled and I don't remember seeing anything like it and can't find it on any of the parts list for my normal suppliers. Does anyone know whether that is a TD part or mislabeled?

Yes, such a bracket does exist. It is metal and bolts on with two bolts. There is a small spacer and a metal strap that clamp on to the header pipe on the bottom.

In lieu of the spacer, you can use a longer bolt and a few extra nuts.

Moss item 412-010. Pictured on the frame/chassis page. You would think it would be in exhaust section,eh? Dan

Without this bracket, all engine torque movements put a lot of force on the exhaust manifold and manifold mounting studs (even with some give at the rubber back hangars). This takes all the load off of the manifold area. George

I don't have one of these brackets on my car. From the price it looks as though it must be made of some precious metal! Matt

I dont have a great picture of the bracket online but in this link you can see the clamp around the exhaust just barely.

Here's a picture of the Moss product in place on my car. I forgot to order the clamp that goes around the pipe however so I just made one out of scrap metal. Works fine so far. Order the 2 bolts for the tranny also if you get one. I don't think they came with the bracket.

Hi all,

Sorry to resurect this thread after all this time, but I'm really grateful to W Stephens for starting it, and all the later contributions. I realised that for the nine years I've driven the TF it's been without the gearbox exhaust bracket - managed to find one in a friends 'box of bits' complete with spacer and clamp.

It would appear from the drawings in the handbook and WSM, (relating to gearbox draining)that the triangular clamp was fitted, (could be fitted?), side projections to the gearbox, hence the provision of projecting stud castings. It all depends on the exact alignment of the exhaust pipe and probably always did!

Just another detail for anoraks like me!

Cheers,

Ed Haskell,

In looking at the photo of your exhaust bracket on the transmission and thinking back to a couple of comments we shared on a similar thread some months ago I would like to suggest something. As I recall you had an original or OEM replacement exhaust pipe like the one I have. I think you will find that your black triangular bracket works properly if reversed and rebolted to the transmission with the bolt hole for the clamp on the gearbox side.

If you have a copy of the blue colored owners manual, on page 38 in a photo titled "refilling the gearbox", you will see a photo of the original orientation of the bracket. I think the new stainless systems, that come from just a couple of manufacturers, have pipe bends such that it runs closer to the frame than the gerabox through this area and that necessitates reversing the bracket to bolt up with ease to the pipe.

I'm attaching a photo of my installation also with an original type exhaust pipe that bolts to the front of the muffler and you'll see it matches the photo in the owners manual.

Please don't take my comments as trying to be critical and I certainly do not want to offend you, but I just wanted to point out something I noticed in your photo. I know you have gone to great lengths to restore you car in original fashion and it certainly has turned out fantastic.

Allyn,

I agree with you - as stated in my comment, the bracket was probably fitted as per your photo, although we've all learnt that the WSM drawings are not always accurate!

I suspect the bracket was often discarded by commercial exhaust fitting shops, because the replacement pipes didn't always line up with the bracket - newly formed clamps were sometimes needed.

Don't worry about raising these details - we're all seekers after the truth! I've just admitted to running the TF without the bracket for many years, although back in the 70s-80s I ran a TD with such a bracket - I think!!

Cheers,

John
