MG TD TF 1500 - Spin on Oil Filter problems

I'm trying to fit a spin on oil filter but can't remove the old fitting.

I've tried Bud's modified socket suggestion and put a torque wrench set at 70 ft lbs on it but can't get it to move at all.

Am I missing something here? Is there a lock nut or secret screw somewhere that you need to undo first?

I'm afraid to put any more force on it in case I damage something. Any suggestions please?

Hello AJ. What type of oil pump ar you working on? If it is the late model the spigot is usually put on with a bar thru the hole and hammered tight. I've needed to do the same to remove them.

It's a 1954 TF. Hammering it tight seems a bit overkill. Can't see why it needs to be that tight. I thought about hitting it with a hammer but was afraid of damaging it!

AJ,

Butch is spot on, I had to hammer mine to break it loose. Other method would be to use a long breaker bar to provide more leverage or put a pipe over a shorter bar to accomplish the same thing.

AJ, the modified socket technique should work, just give it a bit more torque until it loosens. Bud

Thanks guys I got it off eventually. I had to drill out the socket a little as it was a bit short and twisted on the bolt as I put pressure on it. It came off with 80 ft lbs!
