MG TD TF 1500 - Speedo, Tach/clock repair
| Eureka! I had a failed speedo which did not work. I tried to take it out of the case, with no success because I was daunted by the small screw on the trip Odometer reset shaft. A friend of mine suggested to take it to a clock maker he knew of.... and off I went. It was the best thing. The speedo is an early flat faced unit. We took out the screw and the unit came out of the case. To make a long story short.... the clock maker was enthralled. He said "its a clock!" No parts were broken and after a good cleaning, and lubrication. (done by the clockmaker) I now have a fully functioning Speedo! He did the same for the clock. The rod on the balance wheel was arced through and not making a good connection to the contact lever inside the clock. A slight re-alignment of the contact, so it met the contact rod in a new spot and...Voila! I now have a working clock, and speedo..... The best $40 I have ever spent. BTW - The Tach is also a clock mechanism on these early gauges as well. So i highly recommend having a knowledgable clock maker look at these units if they are faulty. |
