MG TD TF 1500 - Specific needs to accomodate Methanol

Has anyone compiled a list of mods, and parts unique to the T-Series, needed to accomodate the 15% Methanol looming on the horizon?

gord, are we talking methanol or ethanol? if the united states dump the ethanol subsidy i am not sure we will have any ethanol in our gas. we'll just be buying more canadian crude, if you'll sell it to us. regards, tom

Tom,

Methanol is the simplest alcohol, with one carbon atom; ethanol has two. Methanol requires 11 acres of corn to operate 1 US-size car for a year, and is more expensive to produce that regular gasoline.

Despite being a Canadian, I'm convinced that "Oil Sands" oil is dirty and harsh on the environment. If the US could just pressure their own Oil Sands producers, like Suncor, (Sun Oil Co), then perhaps it would get clean, and you can take all the oil you want and probably at fair prices (unlike the Arab Gulf states).

My uncle ran alcohol race cars when I was young. I remember that you had to increase the jets significantly.

As I understand it, carburetor cars will not run well on 15% alcohol. Fuel injected with computers that can adjust timing and air/fuel mixtures have no problem.

I know that Briggs and Stratton is not supporting 15%. Their small engines will not run well on it and they are worried about their reputation if folks start having problems keeping their lawn mowers and snow blowers running.

I also know that the discussion on this in the US would carry a strong warning that it should only be used in modern cars.

Alcohol/gas mixtures also have a tendency to separate. And many of the older metals, and joints can react.

I don't think we will see the end of regular old gas. Here in Wisconsin, I am seeing more and more stations that carry 10% ethanol and also gasoline without alcohol.

Running the two in my MGB, I get 3 to 5 miles per gallon more on straight gas.
