MG TD TF 1500 - Some Dimensions Please

My Bulkhead Foot Panel (Moss 450-785 RHD) was broken and I gas weleded is some 24 years ago. In so doing I must have filled in the holes for mounting the gas pedal.

I have had it powder coated so the attache pix is not too good.

Can anyone give me an idea of where to drill at least 2 of the 4 new holes?

Thanks;

Jim B.

JA Benjamin

Jim, you've come to the right source. I have both components from 'the53' loose and cleaned up. IMHO, it's not fair to bomb the forum with high resolution images. My suggestion is that I download some images onto my website (Ttalk) and we can work on this through email. Let me go shoot some images and I'll get back to you here on the forum to let you know where to look. Bud

Sounds like a plan.

Thanks Bud, I should be able to work from that.

Hi Bud and Jim. Surely one of the points of this forum is to create a repository of information on these cars. If you communicate separately by email and post photos elsewhere then someone looking for this information in the future may not be able to find it (I have found this problem several times when looking in the archives). I wouldn't worry about the size of the photos. JMHO. Matt

Tell you what, Matt, I'll post reduced resolution versions of the images on this thread. I don't intend to keep the large images on my website and will be removing them when Jim has what he needs.

It is a very good thing that you posted these. I have more issues that I had thought.
Not only are the bearing block holes missing but the large hole the shaft passes through is not there either.
It seems that, on my car it went through the firewall.

The pedal may have hung from the firewall and not the kick plate.

JA Benjamin

I also seems that the pedal shaft had been modified or repaired. It may have been extended of the bearing blocks replaced.

I am thinking I will plug the firewall hole with a grommet and return the linkage to normal, meaning to what Bud is showing.

Any reason not to do that?

JA Benjamin

Jim, I'm not going to be needing the kick panel, nor pedal for a while yet. I'd be willing to loan them to you for modeling. Other than a few dents and a missing captive nut the panel is pretty good shape. Bud
Bud Krueger

Thanks for the offer Bud. I can do all right on the kick panel with your pictures. I load them into AutoSketch, scale them so that 10" = 10" and then I can pick any dimension off the picture. I am just going down now to lay the panel out.

However I may take you up on the pedal. It looks Like mine MAY have been lengthened. I will know in a day or so.

Thanks again.

In laying out the horizontal dimensions it does look like my pedal is buggered.

Could I bother you for one more dimension as shown in the attached picture?

Thanks /

Jim,
Just a minor point. I made a fume excluder for the gas pedal shaft. I ordered a rubber bellows from the Rubber Store on-line ($11±) and cut it as shown in the image. I pushed it over the shaft in the engine compartment and forced the bottom remaining ring of the bellows thru the existing hole. These old pictures are a little crappy. Can take more if you need them.

Okay? Bud

Bud Krueger

Thanks that does it.
I scaled your previous pictures and got 11-13/16.
I measure just about 11" on mine. It appears that the rotational angle on mine is a lot more than yours.

I am not quite sure how to address the differences.
There is a brass coupling that had been brazed on mine, its in the way. My assembly is about 3/4" shorter than yours. To mount it I would need to move the holes used to mount the piller blocka.
I can remove the coupler, (cut it out) I can gas weld or MIG or TIG inenough extra to add 3/4" but I am concerned about the angle.

You have been very generous with your time. I hate to ask for another picture, but if you can and its not wearing out my welcome an end-on view of the shaft showing the pedel angle and the carb lever section angle will get me what I need.

Thanks again Bud.

JA Benjamin

Let me see if I can figure a way to add a third dimension to these images. Mañana. Bud
Bud Krueger

Okay, Jim, I found my old protractor. I'll be adding a bunch, but I think you should be able to duplicate the shaft between these and the earlier ones. Bud

Thanks for everything Bud, I am sure I can now return it to the original configuration.

Jim
Is your car right or lefthand drive?
Bud, what is yours? Is the linkage the same for both?

I had to replace my 53 Lefthand drive a while ago when the bushing block broke. I got lucky and found one on two piece blocks in case I could not find a replacement. Both Moss and AS listed the parts as no longer advailable.

Tom, it's a LHD '53. I was afraid that the last image might be misinterpreted. It was just easier to get the piece to lie flat on the bench to take the photo.
RHD would be an appreciably different form. Bud
Bud Krueger

Its LHD also. In the very dim past something blue up. Perhaps the flywheel, perhaps the crank. I have a newer engine and there was extensive damage to the firewall and foot board. Perhaps the bearing blocks were damaged also. In the process a PO seems to have changed the linkage and with Buds help I am putting it back.
