MG TD TF 1500 - Secon Speed Gear Plunger Removal
| Good day all: I've got a bit of a poser here ? I obtained an used gearbox, main shaft and the plunger AEC 3181 and spring AEC 3182, for the third speed gear, were extracted from the shaft, nae problem. However; the spring and plunger, same part numbers, for the second speed gear will not budge. It seems the plunger has been jammed, some how. I have tried deburring about the shaft surface but still negative results. I even made an attempt, thinking I might drill a #4 size hole, then tap the bugger and pull it out with a screw. But that went pear shaped as the bit would not even bite the plunger. I reckon that it must be composed of very high carbon steel and I did not have a drill bit designed for that material. So, then, any ideas lads ? Some one suggested freezing the shaft, but I fail to fathom what that would attain ? (parts reference: TD Service Parts List AKD 834, Plate G, and Page # H3 items # 28/29 third speed gear, items # 34/35 second speed gear; or ASL Parts List Page # 17) Cheers for now then; respectfully: Jack Emdall, TD 3191, New Westminster, Bristish Columbia, Canada |

| You might have to use a new sharp cobalt drill bit. Do it in a drill press so the drill cannot wander, with the shaft supported and clamped in V-blocks. Use a low speed and "cool tool" lubricant. Cheers Phil |
