MG TD TF 1500 - 'S' Bracket rear number plate
I was hit from behind and the truck damaged the left rear fender, the tire and wheel and broke off the "S" bracket at the end of the spare tire rack. Does anyone know how to remove the broken piece that stuck inside the pipe? I had used a punch and it will not move, I have used a drill and can't get it out. I would appreciate any ideas or thoughts on this problem. I have a 1952 TD. Louis

Dont know if this is viable I am not familiar with this vehicle, however it may assist. If you have access to an arc welder, use a 10 gauge electrode and low amps so the electrode adheres to the broken piece when you strike an arc on the broken piece inside the pipe. It may take a few attempts to establish a bond between the electrode and the broken piece, once established leverage can be applied to the electrode to remove the piece. ENSURE YOU COMPLETELY DISCONNECT ALL YOUR BATTERY CONNECTIONS PRIOR TO USING THE WELDER, you dont want to cook your car electrics.

I have had to heat the end of the outer pipe to get those out in the past. Might try tapping the remaining piece and screwing an appropriate sized bolt in the hole-then grab it with a slide hammer and try dislodging it that way. Many are firmly rusted in place. Dan

I think plumbers have a giant easy-out thing they use for removing broken pipes- something like that may work.

Make a 50-50 mixture of power steering fluid or trans fluid and either Keytone/Acetone. It is the best penetrating fluid in the world bar non. Let it soak for a few days with several applications. Tap it firmly on the outside all around and it most likely will come loose. Failing all that you can use a cut off wheel and make two slots in the outer tube. then spread them and pull out the broken buit. Close the slots and spot weld. fill and paint and alls well.
