MG TD TF 1500 - Right Hand Drive steering rack
Hi Everyone, A friend of mine has been given an MOT advisory about the steering rack on his TD. What this means is that there is too much play in the steering and that he should get it fixed by the next test( 1 year). The request is for a right hand drive TD steering rack in usable condition. Does anyone out there have one that is for sale. Thanks, David

David It depends where the play is in the steering box it may be possible to strip it down and fit new shims, Section J of the WSM shows how to do this.If you refer to the Moss parts catalogue it shows a breakdown of the steering parts. If the movement is at the hub ends of the steering rack it may need new track rod ends which are quite easy to change. I think further examination of the rack is needed before you go for a complete change as any used rack may still have the same problems. Best of luck Mick 52TD

Hi David, the usual causes of play in the rack is play at the pinion fixed by shim adjustment on the steering damper, play in the inner ball joint fixed the same way plus a worn housing on the left hand side. The housing can be repaired by machining and sleeving or by drilling and tapping the housing and replicating the steering damper, there is a boss there ready to drill. I did this some 15 years ago and it still passes the MOT test. Ray TF 2884

My MKII is RHD and years ago we drilled out the unused boss and fit it up with a double damper set-up. Has had tight and steady steering for yeasrs of road and track use. Simple job for proper mechanic/machinist. No special tools, or bits to fit it up. Paul

Hi everyone, Many thanks for your replies about the RH rack.We are following a number of leads and will report back in due course. It seems that here in the UK a number of reputable suppliers are advertising T Type racks but on enquiring they have no stock!! Cheers, David.

Hi David, All the responses re refurbishing an existing rack are sound - it can be made to last almost indefinately! In view of the dubious quality of many replica racks my very strongest advice would be to stick with the existing one! Cheers John
