MG TD TF 1500 - Removal of TF radiator

Pondering on how to remove the radiator on my TF1500, chassis no HDC40/7481, preparing for my five speed conversion.

The WSM shows only TD rad removal procedure, but I found some info in an old issue of TTT saying that there are only the tie bars and two bottom bolts holding the TF rad in place and that the shell (the chromed one I presume) and core can be reomoved as a unit. Is that really so?

thank you,

Hi Jan,
releasing one side of the wing to wing tie bar lets the wings open slightly which makes the radiator assembly easier to remove.

Thank you,

Will the chrome cover and the actual radiator come off in one piece then?

Hi Jan,
no problem see attached photo.
The main problem is re-attaching the hoses without losing the skin on your hands.

Hi Jan,

Compared to the TD not an easy job, but the whole unit, chrome and all comes off in one go! Ray's tip re. releasing the side panels is sound, and a large piece of cardboard on the inner side of the rad. removes the need for skinned knuckles! You may find there are no nuts on the bottom two studs - if you think about it no real need!

WSM procedure is OK, if somewhat simplistic - remember there are two set screws each side, attaching the wings to captive nuts inside the rad. These captive nuts are often not captive! - fear not an open spanner (wrench) will go between the front slats and hold the PO's replacement nuts.

Sometimes a self tapper was inserted from the lower wing straight into the (hidden!) chrome side of the rad. by the factory!, so check this, as well as the two screws from underneath the front fairing into captive nuts inside the bottom of the rad. - often missing, see Archives.

Good luck,

Thank you, I see the picture clearly now,

Jan,

If you're installing the 5-speed kit using the Ford Type 9 gearbox from Hi-Gear, don't forget you'll have to move the entire engine/gearbox forward about 5 cm and that's why a special fan adapter is included.

This is not a problem with the Skyhook kit which uses the Datsun 210 (not the 210B) gearbox. This is probably the best of all kits but 210 g/bs are impossible to find.

The Dellow kit using the Toyota T50 is also a nice kit, but I'm afraid to say, quite expensive. But it too, doesn't require the engine to be moved forward.

I have opted for the Sierra T9 solution and all the stuff is in my garage waiting for the assembly. I am aware of the fact that the engine must be moved ten millimetres forward to make room for the Ford gearbox, but in general it seems like a fairly straight forward job , at least with the support I can find on this BBS!
