MG TD TF 1500 - Rear spring problems on TF
My 54 TF seems to bottom out against the rubber bump stops above the rear axle too often. I measured from the top of the spring to the bottom of the inner rear fender panel at the location of the rear "U" clamp and got 7" on the left side and 6 9/16" on the right side. I seem to remember during the restoration that I checked and both springs had the same amount of free camber. Any recommendations from the group? Thanks and have a good day! John

How are the shocks? You may want to remove an arm and make sure you have good resistance. George

John, Sounds like your springs might be weak,, or getting weaker,, losing their arch. Did you replace them or just have the re-arched?? Shock condition should not have any thing to do with the spring height that you measured on a stationary car. SPW

I was recently reading a 1996 copy of "safety Fast" from the MG Car club in England and there was an article in there that identified that it was a common problem with the TF's, in that they, unlike the TD's, would "bottom out" easily. This because of the rear spring shape change. The chap showed diagrams of how he had taken out his "hard" bumper stops and replaced them with a honeycombed one from what I believe was a Datsun. This seemed to cure the problem. Regards Rod Murray
