MG TD TF 1500 - Rear Body Panels Questions

I have a '52 TD that just recently arrived. This is my first T series car so lots of things are new. The car has been partially disassembled so I'm trying to figure out some things.

The first question has to do with the top right side of the rear splash apron. It has been removed, but it's been replaced in more or less the correct position and a photo is attached. The top smaller hole is an attachment hole, but what is the lower, larger hole? Does it belong? It's only on the right side.

The second question has to do with the lack of clearance between both rear fenders and the links which hold the rear leaf springs at the rear. On both sides it looks like there is zero clearance between the fender and the links that hold the rear leaf springs. Is this normal?

Thanks,

Larry

Larry,

There's quite a few pictures at my website http://www.dbraun99.com which may help. I ended up shimming the rear wings with fender washers, two on one side and four on the other to clear the rear valance. Then, a friend and I turned two spacers, one half the thickness from aluminum to make a more permanent fix.

The large hole could be for a radio whip antenna. Definitely a PO (previous owner) kind of thing. I would close it up with some welding before painting.

Dave,
Thanks for the comments. Your comment on the rear wings sounds like there should be some clearance there so I'll figure out something to space them out a bit.

A whip antenna by a P.O. occured to me, too. I'll close up that hole.

Also thanks for your web site reference. I'm in absorbtion mode right now so I appreciate anything I can get my hands on.

Maybe for a CB antenna. Dave is exactly right about some type of spacer for the fender. You need to space for clearance, and also eyeball the fender to gas tank gap to make sure that is straight and even. Dave's web pages are fabulous- great detail there. George
