MG TD TF 1500 - Rear Backing Plate IDs

A short while ago there was discussion about identifying the right and left rear backing plates. I had to remove the backing plates in order to remove the rear wheel cylinders of 'the53'. While cleaning them I discovered the stamped part numbers (image attached). The left one seems to say 31814/2LH and its mate says 30817/2RH. Bud

After a closer look, the right side plate number is 30813/2RH. Bud

Bud, when I did the TD I was able to save both backing plates, although one was very bent. I could clearly see the "RH" and "LH" stamped at the end of the part numbers. On the TF I looked for the numbers after I removed them, but was unable to find any trace of them. On the TF I was unable to find any noticeable difference between the left and right pieces. Were you able to find any difference between left and right? There is a 50% chance I got it wrong.
My TD is close to yours, 28929.
Thanks,

Bud, my early TD doens't have the metal tabs with the hole as shown on your plates...what are those for?

I believe they hold the retaining springs.

Dave has it right. If the paint's dry I should be able to get an image of the assembled components later today. Bud

When I took my rear brakes apart (1950 TD) I found I had two right hand backing plates. The difference is in the positioning of the tabs which hold the retaining springs in place, so when a right hand plate is used on the left, the tab does not line up with the hole in the brake shoe. A PO had solved this problem by drilling holes in the backing plate in line with the hole in the brake shoe and using modern retaining springs which engage with a pin inserted from the rear of the backing plate. This arrangement seems to work well. Matt

Matt, it is probably too late to make a change but if you would prefer to have the correct part on your car, I have a LH brake backing plate that I will send for the cost of shipping.
