MG TD TF 1500 - Rear axle tube leaks

Looking at a lovely TF today and whilst underneath I noticed that both axle tubes where the join into the diff are leaking. Leaking, that is a drip from each side after a 3 mile test run.... I've been around T Types for 36 years and can't say I've noticed anything like this in the past... any ideas and a way to seal them...?
Sadly, it's a Roadworthy fail on an otherwise almost perfect car....

If I read you right the leak is in the centre of the axle tubes. There should be a gasket at this point. It would appear that the current/previuos owner has stripped the axle and possibly not put the gasket in corrctly. The only way that I can see to over come this problem is to strip the axle down and put new gaskets in togther with some sealant. Having said that in my WS manual there is only one gasket shown so is it possible that there is a crack in the axle lube in similar positions on either side of the diff?
Not experienced this but just my thoughts.

I read your post to indicate the leak is where the axle tubes meet the diff housing, not the join in the diff housing. That said I know others have indicated similar leaks, but I do not know why or how to fix. As I have just had my diff rebuilt, I hope I don't have this problem.

Can you contact me off board at mvec at bigpond dot com as I am moving from Darwin to Arundel sometime around April next year and would like to get to know some others on the GC with T Series MGs.

Stuart,

YOU read my post correctly, the leaks are indeed where the tubes meet the centre casing and not the split in the diff housing. I'm going to try to clean and seal these discretely and also renew the oil, it appears the oil coming out is very thin... :-( I'll also ensure the breather hole is not blocked...

Please do get in touch, I don't have a T Type here in Aus but have a TA and L1 back in the UK.

I manage a business here on the Gold Coast called the Classic Car Clinic and have a few T Type owners as clients.

Be good to meet you... :-)

I would give epoxy a shot. Clean the surfaces down to bare metal and do a final wipe with lacquer thinner, acetone, mek, alcohol etc. I would use JB Weld, a great epoxy for automotive use.
