MG TD TF 1500 - rear axle breather hole?
Car is almost completed! I've found a couple of differing references to the location of the often clogged breather hole in the left rear axle (midway vs. 1.5" from end). My pinion seal is dripping a bit (about a 3" puddle after a run)and I want to make sure my hole is not plugged with paint but I cannot find the thing! Does anyone happen to have a picture of the axle with the hole showing? I don't think I overfilled the rear end during resto but if I did will the drip stop when it's low enough? Or, I may have "rested" the differential on the end that fixes to the drive shaft during restoration also. I do seem to remember fluid around it when I finally moved it. Please tell me I didn't ruin the seal. Almost there, Ed

The hole may well be covered by the brake line retaining strap. I would move that and look there first. The hole is not too big, maybe 3/16". It is on the top of the axle tube, maybe two inches out from the dif.

| Happened to have photo that shows it. It is on the inside of the brake line clamp, about 3/8 inch toward the differential on the drivers side of the axle. Hole is about 1/8 inch diameter.

Bless you Dallas and thanks D. Ed

Glad to help, I trust you found it? I have been told that the brake line strap was also used to cover the hole, to keep dirt out. Maybe true, maybe false. I don't know, but it makes sense. This is how I did both the TD and the TF. David

Ed, You can take out the filler plug to see if you over filled it, sounds like you might need a new seal,,,,
