MG TD TF 1500 - oil pan bolts
Of all the oil pan bolts there are two that are slotted. What are their proper locations? Rob

Rob, The slotted bolts go at the front of the pan into the timing chain cover. Cheers Phil

Hi Rob, The large head slotted setscrews actually go to the back most area of the sump(pan). The large head, shorter setscrews go to the timing cover end.(no slots) The shallow headed setscrews of course go around the perimeter of the pan. So there are three(3)sets of setscrews securing the pan, however they are all 8x1mm thread. Cheers Rob Grantham TF3719("Aramis"),TF9177("Athos").

Hi Rob, this is Rob:) What is the purpose of three different bolts? I took pictures before taking it all apart but my father had it apart in the past and I do not believe he put them back the same. As you said the threads are all the same. Rob

Rob, Sorry about the confusion, the slotted setscrews go to the back of the oil pan. I was having a senior moment. Here is a pic of the screws on my oil pan. Cheers Phil

Hi Rob W, The two(2)long setscrews with slotted head at the rear sump area are quite difficult to get at once the motor is in the car!Hence the provision of the deep head and slot. These two(2)setscrews are longer when compared to the two(2)going into the timing cover as the aluminium pan casting is deeper at that point. The slots allow a long screwdriver to get to these when the motor is in position on the car. The original perimeter setscrew heads seem a little shallow to me ,however I'm sure the Factory engineers had there reasons!(lol). Incidentally, when a motor has been rebuilt and probably in fact built many times over by now, often you will find these pan setscrews in the incorrect position. Cheers Rob Grantham TF3719("Aramis"),TF9177("Athos").
