MG TD TF 1500 - Oil drain plug wrench size?

I found several conflicting posts on the correct size socket to use to remove the engine oil drain plug. Naturally I don't have anything that fits and I hate to resort to "other" means again. What say the experts?

Ed,

I have cheched several oil drain plugs for the pan, and they all require a 1/2 BSW wrench. If you are looking for an American wrench, I got a 15/16" to fit reasonably well. Would suggest 6 flats instead of 12.

Hi Ed,

Like many others mine had been well butchered in the past by POs or mechanics, and I had to file a smaller hexagon on the stub! I think I can live with this non original feature, and will put it down as a 'repair mod'

Trust yours is in better shape!

Ed - See the chart, Fasteners for XPAG/XPEG Engines in the Other Tech Articles section of my web site at: http://homepages.donobi.net/sufuelpumps/ Third from last chart is one labeled Plugs. Cheers - Dave

If the plug is stuck, there has been water in the pan at some time. Brass plugs in aluminum pans is a recipe for electrolytic corrosion. I had to remove the pan, put the stub of the plug in a big bench vice and warm the aluminum pan with a torch. Then the plug came out and surprisingly the threads were OK.

Put the plug in the milling machine and made the hex 3/4". stamped the plug 3/4" SAE. Works fine now 10 - 12 years.
