MG TD TF 1500 - oil cooler
When replacing a starter on a new friends 53 TD, I noticed it had a very old and pretty well smashed oil cooler mounted under the radiator. Still connected but doubt it functions very well, but is not leaking. The car supposedly had a nut and bolt restoration by a local body shop years ago (really just a paint job), and let me count the number of things wrong with it. A very nice looking car with a rather shabby looking (possibly Singer)front bumper on it. Lots of fun looking at a car that has only been repaired by local gas station jocks for so may years. Never saw a oil cooler like this on a TD; must have been a very early add on, wish I had a picture to include. Bob

Bob Any pictures? My TD came to me with an MGB oil cooler mounded under the front pan, just behind the license plate. Ran it with this for years. Some say it may not be a good idea, but I am unclear on exactly why this is. This was not a factory addition. Just another of those things that PO's do.

IMHO, an oil cooler and oil temperature gauge are two, of the most important items one can have on a T-Series. No, I don't have one on either of my MGs, but I did put one on my Alfa Conrero (now undergong a VERY long-term restoration), but I added the tempearture controller as well. IMHO, any engine that is subject to long-term high revs and high temps, must absolutely keep the oil viscous so as to not run the bearings or the valve gear, dry. Gord Clark Rockburn, Qué.

I agree with Gord! I have oil coolers on both my "T's". Kinda fun watching the engine warm up, the oil pressure starts to drop then the oil cooler thermostat opens and the oil cooler starts working and the pressure pops right back up to 70#'s.(TD) On the TF the opening of the oil thermostat is seamless. Don't see the pressure drop at all. Cheers, Bob
