MG TD TF 1500 - New wheels

I am in the market for a new set of wire wheels and tires.
The set I have is not from Moss because the spokes on theirs and my car are different lengths. There are numerous problems with these wheels and I would rather get a new set than invest the time and money in these.

Am I correct in assuming that the splines on the hub are standard or do they vary for each manufacturer?

The tires are Dunlop 165SR15 steel belted radial.

What other wheel should I consider besides the Moss wheel?
Right now my preference is for painted vs. chrome.

Whats a good tire to look at for these new wheels?

Thanks,
Mort

My first post on this forum was in September last year, one month after I had purchased my TF, asking this very question! Unfortunately I cannot find the thread in the archive as I just can't seem to fathom how to get sensible results to a search. I put in "Wire wheels" for 2010 and got hundreds of results! Maybe someone can advise me how to search. Anyway I think I got 24 replies with an overwhelming vote for chrome. The clincher for me was the post which said” No-one ever comes up to you and says "Great wheels" if they are painted!"
I have the moss 60 spoke wheels which they get from a firm called MWS
http://www.mws.co.uk/TheCompany.asp
They are shod with 165HR15 Vredestein Classic tyres (as we call them)which seems to be the tyre of choice on this forum. I use 24psi front and 26psi back as advised by this forum! (I don’t seam able to get Patsy Two out of the garage without consulting this forum for advice)
Over there if you were going for chrome then Dayton look good and I think are cheaper than Moss.
Would attach a picture if I could remember where I put my camera (Oh the joy of advancing age!)

Thanks Steve

Got the e-mail! It would appear that you leave the search box empty and then scroll through (if you know the year). When I put "Wire Wheels" into the search box wire wheels did not figure in the results. As the saying goes "Go figure"!!

PS You get up early!

Mort,

I bought a set of five painted wire wheels from Moss last February (15X4.5, 60 spoke) and then took by old wheels with fairly new Kumho tires and my new set of wheels to Hendrix Wire Wheels, Greensboro, NC for mounting and balancing. As delivered, my five new wires required no adjustment by Allen Hendrix, which he attributed to vastly improved quality control by the manufacturer in India. Quality control at Dayton may have gone the other direction in recent years, although they built a good set of chrome wires for me several years ago to my specs for a one-off car I had built. I have run maybe 40-50 wire wheels over the years, mostly on old British cars, most of them chrome. This time, I opted for painted wires for my '53 TD. Actually, I would rather have original disc wheels, but that wasn't the way my car was equipped when I bought it.

Thank you all for your comments. As an update, I have discovered that my wheels are not MG or MG conversion wheels. The best guess from a few experts is that they are from a Jaguar of some vintage. It is a larger hub than the TF wires and the wheel is much heavier. If I remember the number right, the specs for the TD (TF) hub are 42 spline and mine are 88 and of course the OD on my hubs is much larger.
In order to get my brake shoes to reach the drums I had to put some weld at the tip of the shoe where it meets the adjuster. They were not opening wide enough with the adjusters to reach the drums. After welding the bakes were adjustable and I resolved the soft brake and distance I had to push to get any action. I no longer have to pump the brakes.
All that being said I am now considering a complete conversion as per the Moss set. New drums, new hubs, new wheels. If I go this route I will grind the shoes back to spec.
My preference right now is 60 spoke wires with chrome wheels and stainless spokes.
And yes I know I am violating the look of the original TD's.
Any comments most welcome.
