MG TD TF 1500 - needle bearings

It looks like I will be forced to rebuild the gearbox and I see that the cluster gear roller bearings are $104.00. The other two sets are only about $20.00 each. Why so much more?

There are more of them (14 in two places are 28 total), and they also are part of the distancing requirement to make the thrust washers work so they have rigourous length control. I always replace them if I replace the layshaft and the thrust washers.

Dave-
What did you have for breakfast?! (send some!)
"...thirty-two needle bearings on which the third gear is mounted."
The layshaft rollers have nothing to do with the thrust washer fit, unless they are just plain too long (or other parts are badly worn).
Generally, needle rollers are standard items at bearing supply places, and cheap. BMC used to supply them as boxes of 50. These may be some odd size, or we are being screwt agin.
A possibility is that they are now supplying some sort of caged rollers, as has happened with other things that originally had loose rollers. In that case, it becomes an arcane bearing, rather than a standard part. There are valid arguments for this, especially in high speed assemblies, but loose rollers worked for a very long time.
Examination of the rollers under magnification will show if they need to be replaced, as the initial wear eats through the hard case before pitting starts, very visible. Wear tends to begin at the ends of rollers. Roller wear may or may not coincide with shaft wear, esp. if the box has been monkeyed with previously. Shaft wear is usually worst and first.

Hey, I'm not under the influence!

They aren't caged. But I will admit I probably screwed up the thrust washer fit comment.

I looked up the price I paid for them last, in 2005, they were less than $35. The other roller bearings were about $14.

Thanks Fletcher... oh and it was Special K that I had, but the coffee was really, really strong.
