MG TD TF 1500 - More about drip trays..where to get them.

I have a friend that owns a machine shop, that can make these trays out of aluminum, for $45....
I have NO financial interest in this, just trying to do members a favor....
Email me if you are interested.

Ed,
Please post a pic when he gets around to making one,,,

Sounds like a good deal. I would be interested in seeing one as well.

Now that I know that there might be some interest, I will encourage him to make a sample....
Especially if there are some members that are ready to buy....

Ed, I'm anxious to get a look. Would that include a drain spigot? I wouldn't think it necessary to paint them. Most users seem to have their favorite engine paint. Bud
Bud Krueger

What happens if one should "forget" to drain it? How much labor involved to install?
Interested,
Ed
efh Haskell

Bud
yes, that will include the drain. The paint would be powdercoat, but he can leave them plain.

The bracket is not welded, and removing the bottom bell-housing bolt, makes the whole tray easily removable...

I'm interested as well!

powder coat is perfect

I'd like to buy one. Price is pretty good.

My friend has been amazed at the response....He will be working feverishly to finish a sample....
Note that powdercoat is an option, and would add to the cost....Can't say how much, yet...I don't think it would be huge....Most folks will want to paint their tray, whatever engine color is....
Attached is an image of mine, the one I did myself, below the flywheel housing...You really don't notice it.

Unpainted would be preferable to me. I don't typically paint aluminum parts. Raw metal is much easier to clean grease from, and silver looks nice anyway.

Ed, I'd like one too.

Kinda nice to know that my TD is not the only one leaking some oil------now a drip pan for antifreeze--one for brake fluid---another for transmission fluid---a rear end one, and another for spilled beer------and maybe one for tears as well----------
TCK Tom

Just to update, the machinist called this a.m. to let me know that the material (aluminum), is on order...Hopefully the first "sample" box will be ready by the end of next week....
Once we confirm that the sample will fit my engine, then he can actually start taking orders.
He has a CNC mill, that he will use to generate some of the dimensions, so once it is "right", should be relatively easy to duplicate.
Edward
E.B. Wesson

While you are waiting for your fancy properly made catcher from Ed's friend... You could make one yourself from some bits in the shed like I did.

Position of drain plug means it will always have some oil left in it unless you jack up the other side of the car. On the other hand you don't have to start grinding off the fins at the back of the sump whic I have seen suggested for some designs.

I pop rivited the two angle pieces together and put some self adhesive window sealing rubber on the top of the tin to hlep contain the oil and direct into the hole if it is not going down the pin. Also provides some cushioning to stop rattling between tin and bell housing

Not a great work of art but...

There is nothing wrong with the way you solved the problem...
My biggest fear would be that the thickness of the can, will make it very delicate....

Here in the U.S., most cans are so thin, you can easily dent them with two fingers.
Edward
E.B. Wesson

Ed, could you find out what the shipping cost to Germany would be ? It might even go by "large letter" or something similar (e.g. German Post offers that for about 5$ if it is below 500 gms (1 pound) and dimensions would not be a problem). If there´s a reasonable cost of shipping, I´d definitely be interested as well

Best Regards

As soon as I've seen the "sample", I will begin setting up some sort of formal arrangement with the shop...
Until then, it's premature to be concerned about shipping charges...However, in my business (before retirement), I often shipped to Europe, and don't remember it to be very expensive, as long as you didn't ask for rush delivery.
Edward
E.B. Wesson

Materials are in, and we should have a sample this week.

My garage floor (and the driveways of my friends) can't wait!
David Sheward

My wife wants the garage front to be macadamized this spring. The planned production run of drip trays will come in handy to reduce MG inflicted damage to new surface.

Jan
Jan Kristoffersen

Jan,
You will need a larger hammer than the one in the MG's tool kit for that if your doing the work yourself!
David Sheward

I'll stick with MG servicing, and leave the driveway job to professionals and $$$$$$.....
Jan Kristoffersen

I'd like one too!

Another update....
Joe called me today, and has a finished tray to try out on my engine....He will come to the house tomorrow.
It is machined aluminum...I have not seen it, so I can't say more, but I will take some photos, and post (if it fits, of course).....
Then I will turn over all the emails to Joe, and post his on this thread....I will tell him to fill the orders as they have been received...
After that, you guys will be dealing directly with him.
Just to underscore, I have no financial interest in this, I only want to help other members...
Since Joe is a friend, and a real "car guy", naturally I wanted to give him some business as well. I know he is a top-flight machinist, (and a good person), but I can't get in the middle of any disputes that might arise...Hope you all will understand that.
More tomorrow...I hope!
Edward

Ed,
We all understand and don't worry about it. you have done us all a great service no matter how it turns out.
Thanks again,
Mort
Mort 1950 TD1851 Möbius

So here's a photo of the first sample....
Joe says he used 1/4" material, but now that he has fitted the box to my block, he will be using 1/8" material...1/4" is overkill, and raises his cost too much....The arc was perfect , so it should fit everyone's car.
Drain valve is slightly below the wall, so it should drain well.
This is not the bracket that he will be using, but I placed it there to show that there will be a bracket.
First box ready-to-sell on Feb.1st....
I am going to email him the order list , so if you haven't already emailed me , please do so ASAP.
It is too difficult for me to hand copy everyone's email, and too much chance for error.
Thanks
Edward

Not to hijack the thead (or
Ed's deal), but I finally got my tray made. Turned out it was ready weeks ago, they left a message which I never got, etc. Here is a shot of it. Fit the car perfectly, have not driven it yet. The guy charged $68, and I bought and installed the drain. They would also make more, and would shorten the nipple. George

Geesh George...think I've seen something like that before.

Note that I don't have any "deal" going...Just helping members.
Nice job, too...Hopefully, Joe, my friend, will have equally nice trays at $45...His problem now will be filling all those orders in a timely manner....
As I said earlier, should have the first batch ready by Feb.1....
Obviously with this many orders, it will take some time to produce all of them.
If this goes well, I'm hoping that some other hard-to-get parts might be produced in the future.
Edward
E.B. Wesson

Hi Ed, I meant your entire project, not any kind of financial deal. I know you are just doing it to help the members and our driveways! You have done a bunch of groundwork on this, and hopefully your friend can get them done. If for some reason his fall through, I can get in touch with the folks that made mine, etc., and they could make some. No other interest either, just helping. George PS- thanks again Gene!
