MG TD TF 1500 - Micky Mouse Ears
I have recently acquired the brass wing-nut (commonly known as MM Ears since it is really out of proportion for the job) which locks down the air cleaner on the TD. This finally replaces the small steel one which has worked well for a generation or two. Not unsurprisingly the thread of the brass nut has stripped. Can anyone confirm what thread is actually required. With this I can consider whether to helicoil if this size exists. Or would the better approach be to drill out and sweat in a piece of brass rod, drill and tap. Regards IanB

Good day Ian: The air cleaner stud, BMC Part # 168390 (TD and TD2); or Part # 168439 (TD Mk II) is threaded 6mm x 1mm, at both ends. Therefore; the wing nut, BMC # WGN 012, is tapped in the same manner. You are quite correct in noting the disproportionate size of the wing nut, especially in relationship to the function it performs. I believe metric heli-coil inserts are available, but the stud will govern that factor, ie: if it is still 6mm x 1mm. Cheers then; respectfully: Jack Emdall, TD3191, New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada

Thanks, Jack, that is most helpful Metric nuts are easy to find here, as well as the metric helicoils, so I will get on down to the tool shop and confirm the thread and get on with the job. IanB

I checked out their site and was so amazed of the amount of special nuts, bolts and fittings they have, that I was on their site for about 20 minutes! I think everyone should bookmark their site. Thanks for posting the site address! PJ |

So Ian - which Mickey Mouse nut did you settle upon as closest to original? My mother worked for Lockheed on the P-38, and also called them Mickey Mouse nuts. Tom

Sorry, Ian, I mis-read the post. I now see that you have an original. Tom
