MG TD TF 1500 - MG TF steering arm
| Having followed what you guys on this site routinely do for a year or so, I was inspired to bring my TF into my heated workspace with hopes of having it on the road this coming summer after having just working on it occasionally over the last 34 years. I decided to tackle the front end this week as this is an area that I think really needs attention. I removed the steering rack and now am about to take the suspension apart. In looking at the steering arms, I thought that the one on the right looked different from pictures that I have seen, although I can't find very clear images of this area. Is the steering arm on the right supposed to have a dog leg in it or should it be relatively straight like the left arm? I am sure this is the first of many possibly dumb questions I will have as I proceed. Many Thanks, James

Hi James, that right hand steering arm should not have that nasty bend. It should look very much like the LH one. I have a good RH steering arm for sale if you need it. Cheers, Hugh

I can not imagine that that arm is bent,, rather, it might be from some other car that happened to fit at the time the PO needed it........ SPW

I had a bent steering arm on my car. Took me a while to figure it out. These steering arms don't get bent by accident. My car had been in a crash and the arm was bent because the chassis was twisted and they couldn't get the tracking to set up properly. You need to do a bit more investigation before you change it, like measuring the chassis across the diagonals. By the way, getting it out of the suspension upright is no easy matter. You will need a press. AJ

That steering arm is not bent it is cast in that shape- must be from another car that happened to fit. I suspected something was amiss because the tie rod on the right had a lot more threads exposed at the tie rod end. I kind of have a bad feeling that I might find the swivel pin has a problem, too when I get it disassembled. Anyone have a spare swivel pin and steering arm assembly they want to sell? Thanks, James

Thanks to all for confirmation of what I had suspected, thanks for the offer Hugh, I will see if that is all I need or if I should look for the complete assembly. Best, James
