MG TD TF 1500 - MG T-Series Jack Assembly

Does anyone know the proper way to paint the original jack for a T-series? I think mine is original? It says Shelley on the side? (picture provided) I was looking on eBay some time ago and ran across a nice one for sale that was painted forest green. I contacted the seller and he said that was the color they were from the factory. Moss sells a reproduction for $159, the picture of it appears to be all black. Any thoughts?

Also If anyone has, or knows of someone with a handle assembly I would be interested in a possible purchase.

Thanks
Rich

Mine is black, and old paint. Came with the car when I got it in the 60's, so I doubt anything has been done to it.

Rich,
I still have the jack that came with the TD when it was new and Tom is correct. It was black then and is black now. I have never seen a green jack.

Original King Dick jack in original dull black. King Dick also supplied the T series.

In the first entry there is a "snap ring" in the lower left of the picture. I have a perfectly good jack except it needs that ring.

Anybody got some idea of how to make one? Or have one they will part with?

OK, black it is, unless I hear different! Thanks guys

Is it possible that Shelley and King Dick jacks were painted differently?

The Shelleys and KD's were all black for our cars. Maybe they could have been painted differently at the request of another manufacturer?

Attached pic of my Shelley collection (no T type jack in the photo though).

very nice collection Matthew!

Matthew,

Excellent picture of original tool kit - am I right in thinking that the tappet spanner is missing? I had an interesting evening making one from sheet steel!

John, maybe the tappet spanner was replaced by the factory with the "Cylinder Head" spanner?? I was also missing the tyre valve tool but have since sourced another.

Matthew,

As far as I know always a tappet spanner - size is different from cylinder head spanner. My open spanners are flat stamped like yours, but no name on them. Presumably a case of an alternative supplier, as happened from time to time, and as hinted at in the handbook!

Bob, I went out to the garage and got my jack, and removed the snap ring to see if I could locate another, or something similar. Of course, since it is a spring, it went thwannngggg and went flying across the garage, bouncing of several walls in the process. Finally found it, and have been to all the local flaps, Home Depot, Lowes, and Fastenall, to no avail. Sorry, but I tried. Larry

I found a link on eBay with the jack I was talking about that is forest green. This seller claims it is original. It’s a slightly different jack then mine.

I do not recognise that one as a T type jack (happy to be corrected if someone has a reference for it). There is a good website on Shelley jacks by one of the MGA board members (search "Shelley jack").

Larry, Thanks very much for the effort. That is what I have been finding. That ring is spring steel and would be very hard to duplicate by an individual.

I was hoping someone would say they had a broken jack that had that spring. I guess I'll just have to acquire another jack.

Matthew - I also don't recognize this as a T-series jack. The base especially looks quite different from any jack I have ever received when I bought a TD or TF, and I believe the seller is incorrect on almost every count!

Has anyone EVER owned a T-series car with the sort of jack shown above? I certainly never have. Inquiring minds want to know - come on, all Authenticity Police - let us hear from you!
