MG TD TF 1500 - Mark II - Possibly good buy

There's a Mark II that isn't being advertised as such for $ 13,750. Lots of patina inside, clean outside. It looks like a good starting point for a resto, or leave as is. Claims to be original and looks it.

Wow!....Yes , it is a Mk2, and what appears to be a car in really nice drive-able condition....
If I didn't already have "Rocky", I would probably buy it.

That is a beautiful car,and a great buy! The body seems to be in great shape, the interior looks to be original. The engine is the wrong color,so it has probably been worked on. Great deal for someone.

Yikes, just a couple hundred away from mine, TDC/17198, RHD.

Ah yes, I agree with you all. A lad could be tempted.

and only 100 above mine (17398), interestingly has a much lower engine # than I have.

Indeed a great car for a great price. A fellow club member here in Germay tries to sell his MK2 for 28k Euros, so IŽd really be tempted to import this one...

A very nice car but I question the year. It has the early TD tail lights and the w/w is located on the right side of the windscreen. This is not a 53 model.

Wow, looks legit with the ID tag stuff correct, the correct carbs and rare air cleaner. You can also see the rear Andrex shock links. No shot of the block #, but definitely a real MkII!
George Butz

Something just does not seem correct with this ad. The car is in Beverly Hills. So we are not talking about some farmer with a car in their garage that they want removed.

These folks deal in cars. They could not have missed that this is a MKII and that even if it was not, this is a nicer TD that their asking price for the car market they are in. Even with the current economy, someone in Beverly Hills is going to snap this up with a simple "For Sale" sign.

Wondering if this is a typo and it should be 23,000?

George R, you're right - it's a mid 52 model. http://ttypes.org/database/TDC17498

As stated before on this site, the year of the car was usually when it was registered, regardless of the year of the car. Thus a 52 sold in 53 could easily have been registered as a 53.

Seven months is an awfully long gap between manufacturing and sale, and I doubt a TD would have sat unsold for that long. There wasn't a lot of competition for a similarly-performing and -priced car, so there was still good demand for T-types, even in the US. The main competition, the Healey, was just beginning to appear in 1953, so my guess is that it's juts a mistake somewhere.

There is an other one offered on ebay by now and it will end on Sunday. Not looking that nice painted and more a project car but at a fraction of the price asked here and it looks way more original than the green one

Year is a moveable feast. My MK2, is registered as a 1948, because the customs/shipping people made a mistake when it was shipped from England. Tried to explain to MVD, but they were less than interested and so it was registered as a '48. Any one familiar with them knows, it and the one being offered are '52s, believe September/October.

Tom,
My TD "came out" on Nov. 7th, 1950. I picked it up from the Dealer in June 1951. I have no idea why it took so long, but here is another case of 7 months from factory to customer. It must have been a slow boat.

George Raham [TD4224]

George - I see your point, and although it's surprsing, I partially conceed your point! Your car would have had to sit for only two months unsold to be the next year's model; the green one would have had to sit for more than six to be considered a 1953 model.

As for the black Mark II on eBay, it is no more than a very rough car and would need a LOT more than the green one to do even a basic resto. Just look at the modern bolts around the running board/fender area - NOT a good sign. I think this car will disappoint someone in a big way... And Ralph, yes, the black one is a 'fraction" of the price of the green one, but that fraction is almost half. I can see spending an easy $10,000 on the black one PERHAPS to make it into the driver that the green one is for $13,750

The primer TD/C two weeks ago was the real bargain of the bunch, with rebuilt engine and trans, all there, and ready for paint - all for $6,000. I couldn't bid from work and it was sold when I got home, or else I certainly would have bought it.

....snap it up just for the original green leather.....

The black Mark II (220896560070) sold for $7469, and I consider it no bargain.
